problems with Canon 5D mark iii import into Premiere Pro 5.5 on pc
Posted by James Corsolini on April 24, 2012 at 9:40 pmWe just got a new 5D mark iii. When importing the files into Premiere, sometimes the program just hangs up and you have to reboot the PC. Sometimes it brings in the file it had problems with before.
We’ve been importing 7D and XDCAM EX footage with no problems before this. So, is something going on with the camera? Is anyone using a mark iii yet?

April 25, 2012 at 1:19 amThis won’t solve James’ problem, but I thought I’d share my experience as a Mac user.
So far, Premiere Pro 5.5 on Mac has worked really well at importing our 5Dmk3 footage. All-I and IPB formats. Really impressed.

April 25, 2012 at 1:36 amWe captured with the IPB codec (which I think is the same one used in the mark ii), not the new ALL-I codec. Tomorrow we’ll do more tests with both. If no one else is having this problem, I wonder if the camera is bad?

April 25, 2012 at 2:01 amHi James,
We haven’t had any problems like that. We do know however that in 5.5 we import the footage in the 601 colorspace as canon changed to 709 and didn’t tell us. We fixed that in 6.0. Also for the 59.94 footage Canon’s timecode is writing something strange, this will be fixed in an update to cs6.
Cheers

April 25, 2012 at 2:54 pmWhat is the process you use for importing the 5D footage in the 601 colorspace?
I’ve searched the adobe help files but have come back empty handed…

April 25, 2012 at 6:31 pmOK I just read about this work-around on the Adobe forum. Remane the .mov files with .mpg extension. This “fools” PP into thinking it’s a different codec. It does work!
Apparently this is a CS5.5 thing. -
