problems with AE
Posted by Judita on June 9, 2005 at 9:32 pmAll of a sudden, I can’t import any files to AE. I can only ‘import recent files’. I can’t ‘import multiple files’ either. I’ve rebooted twice. Any suggestions?

June 9, 2005 at 10:27 pm1) Have you shut down and restarted?
2) Have you tried it in a different project than the one you are working in (Sometimes files get currupt and AE just bugs out)? You can always import your current project into a new one to avoid losing your work.
3) Have you trashed your user preferences – on my Win XP computer they are here:
C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorApplication DataAdobeAfter EffectsPrefs
You need to tell windows to show your hidden files. The delete the AE preferences TXT document – AE will create it again as soon as you start AE.
Not sure where these files are on Mac.
3) Have you tried reinstalling AE?
4) Have you checked for viruses?
Not that I have any knowledge on this… but give it a shot. I’d wait to hear from someone else before trying # 4 and 5.

June 9, 2005 at 10:33 pmI’ve restarted twice. I’m on XP. I’ve opened an old project and I get the same problem. I am going to trash the user prefs next – thanks for that suggestion especially, because I didn’t know to try it – then reinstall is the next step if trashing the user prefs doesn’t work.

June 9, 2005 at 10:46 pmAfter trashing (or before – I’d probably try this first), first try importing the original file into a blank project – Go to File > Import > File, and then just navigate to your old AE Project. Once it’s imported into AE, copy all of the layers from your comp, and put them in a new comp. See if that works.
Then try reinstalling.

June 9, 2005 at 11:25 pmwell, we tried trashing the prefs and it didn’t help. So now I’ve uninstalled and I’m trying to reinstall and it’s telling me my serial number isn’t valid (I’m typing it just as it is on the sticker on the back of the CD.)
This is AE 6 by the way, failed to mention that before.Who/what/where do I go to resolve the serial number issue?

June 9, 2005 at 11:43 pmCrud. I wanted you to test importing it into another project and see if the trouble happened. Also, if it was only happening to that one file, then it wasn’t the program, it was the file. That’s why I said to hold off on reinstalling. Someone else might have had a better suggestion.
If you registered your copy of AE, online, when you got it then you can just copy and paste the exact serial number from your account at the adobe website:
https://store.adobe.com/store/customerregistration/your_account.jhtml
If not, register it now, and then check out this page:
https://www.adobe.com/support/cfcomp.html
It says: Register the current versions of your eligible Adobe product and receive complimentary, person-to-person support on issues related to installation and product defects.
call them at the number 206-675-6310
I got it from this page:
https://www.adobe.com/support/phonenumbers/main.html
After Effects 6 is still supported according to this page:
https://www.adobe.com/support/dtpproducts_list.html
Hope that helps.

June 10, 2005 at 12:59 amI appreciate your help. I had tried different files, opened old projects, made new projects, all the work-arounds I could think of. Thanks for the tip on getting the serial number to work – yes it’s registered so that’s what I’ll do – tomorrow… I’m home from work now.
