Problems recording HD to the 1200A
I’m having a weird problem using the 1200A with FCP5.
I’m working on a project using varicam footage shot at 720P/60. I’m working in the DVCPROHD codec – I imported the footage via firewire.
I have some graphics supplied to me by the client on DVCPRO that features sparse animation on a pure white background. I also have a title sequence composed in motion that features a white background. The whites in both cases read just under 100 on the FCP scopes.
When laying back to the 1200A all the live action video records perfectly, including shots with peaks at about 105. But the white graphics have huge quantization errors and cause servo errors on the deck. It doesn’t matter if I record via firewire or via HD-SDI using the blackmagic codec. The white graphics can’t seem to be recorded by the deck.
I’ve sent the deck back to Panasonic but they claim there is nothing wrong with the deck. except for some dirt on the heads. While it’s true that cleaning the heads will help reduce the problem, it in no way does away with it. For now I’m reducing the levels on the white to about 85, which is not a choice I would otherwise make.
I’ve also posted this message on the Varicam forum.
Anybody seen anything like this or have any suggestions?
