  • Problems Outputting Footage From FCP to JVC HD100

Posted by John Fowler on July 16, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Hi everyone, I’m having a bit of a problem exporting a sequence via the print-to-video option in FCP to my HD100U. I posted this in the JVC board but so far I got no responses so I thought I’d try here. I’ve had no problems capturing footage and cutting it in FCP so I’m a bit perplexed as to why it won’t work as a recording device. When I do the print-to-video option FCP tells me that the device I’m sending the footage to may not be a HDV 720p24 device, but it is. I have the camera set to HDV and have checked the connections properly, I even tried recapturing footage to make sure there wasn’t a problem with the IEEE 1394 firewire cable. Nope, it’s fine. I click OK on the FCP warning about having an HDV device and when the computer starts sending the images the JVC LCD screen turns blue with no picture and it doesn’t record sound or video. Does anyone know how to get around this problem? Thanks!

    From JVC:

What is the difference between GY-HD100E and GY-HD101E?

The FireWire (IEEE1394) port on the GY-HD101 allows input as well as output of the digital signals HDV (High Definition) and DV (Standard Definition). The GY-HD100 will only output. This is the one and only difference.

Could you recommend a mini-DV player that would be compatible with Sony mini-DV HD tapes with 720p24 footage on them?

You posted that you have an HD100U. The CreativeCoward post was about the HD100E/101E. The U model is for the US, the E model is for Europe. Different cameras.

The HD100U will capture DV and HDV over firewire. Getting the right settings in FCP and the camera can take a minute.

For 1280p24 the FCP sequence needs to be set to HDV 720p24. If you open Sequence / Settings you will see 23.98. That is correct.

The camera needs to be set to 720p24. Switch from VTR to CAM (button behind LCD), open the menu, VIDEO FORMAT / FRAME RATE to 24 / EXECUTE / REC to HDV, HD24p / EXECUTE.
    Switch from CAM to VTR
Cue tape, press play/still for still.

FCP File / Print to or Edit to / select Start Automatically / Wait for conform / watch for beginning of record.

    Almost easy.

If you still have trouble, check the JVC manual carefully. It really does work if all the settings are right.

Thank you George, so then I guess that information about the HD100U inability to accept input from the computer is incorrect?

I re-read your post, sorry, I see now that CC was talking about a different camera. Thanks again!

    Hi George,

I double-checked everything per your instructions and re-read the manual carefully but it still won’t record. It appears to be receiving something because when I do print-to-video and push play/still on the camera it starts recording automatically but no picture or sound comes up. Just a blank blue screen. I don’t think there’s anythign wrong with the camera or computer as I’ve had zero difficultly in capturing footage onto my computer. Any ideas?

    Killian

Just did a test print-to-tape with my gear to recheck my settings. Worked fine.

I suspect something is wrong in the HD100 VTR setup menu. You might want to post this question on https://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=98. Someone who uses 24p more than I do might know the secret handshake.
