Problems importing QT file into FCP
Posted by Barbara Santi on January 30, 2011 at 10:42 pmHi – I’ve never had this problem which has just happened today…
I’ve been trying to digitize rushes from a mini DV tape/camera as Appleprores (HD) as I always do. The tape stops near the end of what I shot and crashes FCP. I’ve tried this 4 times now. the footage is 30 mins long.
In capture scratch the QT file looks like its in my capture folder but when I try to import it to FCP it says that access is denied. It wont open in QT to view and looks different from other clips. I’ve tried this on both my macs but neither work. Last time I imported was last sunday with no problem.
I’ve looked to see if theres any QT updates that I need but I cant seem to find any…I’ve also trashed my preferences.
Has anyone else experienced any probs recently? any suggestions?
thanks

January 30, 2011 at 11:06 pmHow are you capturing DV as ProRes? You need a capture card to do this. And WHY are you doing this? You aren’t gaining any quality…the damage has been done when it was recorded to DV. All you are doing is increasing the file size.

January 30, 2011 at 11:12 pmI do have a capture card – I do this all the time. Regardless if you think that Pro res is not better (I have done tests myself and read numerous forums that say it is better) have you any ideas why this is happening as this has never happened before. I am an editor and this problem has never happened…
Its shot on Sony HDV Z% on HDV (I always use appleprores (hd) and fine this excellent. What damage are you toalking about?
thanks

January 31, 2011 at 12:18 amI didn’t know you were talking HDV…you said MiniDV in your original post. MiniDV is Standard Def…HDV is high def. Be sure to say HDV so that you avoid confusion please…
[Barbara Santi] “I do have a capture card – I do this all the time. “
Which one?
[Barbara Santi] ” Regardless if you think that Pro res is not better (I have done tests myself and read numerous forums that say it is better) “
It is better if you capture from a source that is not already compressed. HDV is HIGHLY compressed…4:2:0 color space. If you capture HDCAM say…ProRes capture is better than capturing it as HDV. HDV fits on the same type of tape as DV…has the exact same data rate as DV, which is an SD format…1/10th the dimensions. That gives you an idea on how compressed it really is.
BUT…we all agree that capturing HDV as ProRes is a better way to do things.
Why not mark an out point BEFORE the end of the tape? There might be an issue with the video cutting off, crashing FCP, and it wasn’t able to finish off encoding the QT file.

January 31, 2011 at 12:23 amIt would REALLY help to know what capture card you are using….
Might be good to uninstall the drivers for it, download the latest drivers and install them.

January 31, 2011 at 12:49 amWell, iMacs can’t use capture cards…and MacBook Pros have limited option.
HOW EXACTLY are you capturing? Via firewire? The HDV to ProRes capture trick via firewire? We can’t help you unless we have exact details.

January 31, 2011 at 2:09 amI’ve had FCP crash on import from my Z1 when I was using the HDV to ProRes “trick”, as Shane calls it.
I suspect it’s something to do with timecode, or lack thereof, but, of course, I have no basis for this – just my software engineering suspicious mind 😀
Might I suggest that you try stopping the HDV tape deck by pressing the stop button at the point at which you have finished capturing? This is the only way that I can get FCP to respond timeously. Pressing the escape key does not work for me, and, in fact, FCP has crashed a few times at this point.
Please let me know if this works for you 🙂

January 31, 2011 at 9:38 amHi Barbara,
Which kind of HDs are you using for capturing?[Barbara Santi] “..I have tried to stop the filming (by pressing esc on the keyboard) but it crashes…any other ideas?”
Pressing “Escape” works if you are using “Capture NOW”, otherwise just aborts the capture.[Barbara Santi] “have no idea sorry. I have the latest i7 imac and mac book pro – I dont think it has anything to do with the card as the 2 machines have different ones…”
Are you talking about Capture/IO cards, or about Graphic Cards (GPU)?

January 31, 2011 at 10:38 amHi Rafael,
not sure what you mean – Ive shot the 30 mins interview in HD digitising with applprores (hd) as I always do…just did exactly the same a few days ago with no prob…
I’ve tried it on different machines…
do you think the tape has got corrupted in some way? The tape plays fine on the deck. The file on the computer is in the capture scratch folder but it is not recognised & wont open in QT viewer…
all very strange…
and when I stop the transfer FCP crashes (which it never really does)I’ve trashed FCP preferences
any advice would be great
thanks
