  • Problems converting to Mpeg2

Posted by Josh Weiss on January 30, 2007 at 10:26 pm

I often get the request to post mpeg2s with muxed audio for clients. god knows why they need this format, but for some reason they do. Where i work, it is a mix between autodesk smoke, and more recently final cut machines.

With exporting from the smoke you can export a 720 x 480 QT and bring it into Cleaner and get a small mpeg2 out of it. It will maintain the ratio and look decent. With final cut when I export a QT to convert, even if it is 720 x 480 the output looks very low quality. Overall its fine, but several frames stick and have weird trales behind them. I have tried this from several different source materials and even on different computers and different projects.

I don’t use compressor because as far as I know the mpeg2 export from compressor is only for dvd format and either does an mpv or if you tell it to mux does a different non-.mpg format. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

    I’ve mainly been exporting to QT Animation full quality 720 x 480. The original sequence is D1 720 x 786. It is FCP 5.0 on a G5.

    JW,

Compressor will make a muxed mpeg 2. It’s down near the bottom, called muxed m2v.

I don’t see this setting in my compressor, and if I try to make it by hand it changes the extension to something that isn’t mpg and if I change it it won’t play.

You need the latest version of Compressor, sorry. If you have the budget, look into Compressor 2, and check out Episode and Squeeze.

I have Compressor 2 and do not have the option either. Could you be a little more specific on the location of the Muxed MPV option?

OK i found it after a little more web searching and thought I would update.

If you select your Mpeg flavor and a Aiff/Dolby. Double click on the Mpeg file in the batch window.

The inspector window should open up. In the inspector window click on the Extras taba and on the bottom it says…

    “Multipexed MPEG 1/Layer 2 Audio”

    Check the box.

    Life just got easier.

I see that option, however that was my point all along. When you click this option, the file is not a .mpg. How do you get a .mpg out of it?

Man. Your right. I also need a M2V. I started using this program mpegstream or something, but it only does Mpeg-1 so the file sizes are much bigger.

There has to be some freeware or a plugin that will let us export a mux mpeg2 from FCP/Compressor. I may get Premiere when it hits Mac’s later this year and just saw screw FCP.
