  • Problem with Y-axis Rotation in Rudder Animation in Cinema 4D R24

Posted by Mauricio Barrientos on August 22, 2024 at 8:29 pm

Hi, I have a problem, I really need help. I’m using Cinema4D R24, and I want to animate a rudder so that it rotates only around the “Y” axis. But when I rotate it and record it on the timeline, it has a weird wobble, a back-and-forth motion. I’m leaving a video LINK below… My question is, why, if I only dragged the rotation of the “Y” axis, did it affect the other two axes? And how can I fix this, please, since it’s not the first time this has happened… I would really appreciate any help…

    Hi Mauricio,

The axis of the object might be slightly off. You could use the Centre Axis To tool and try again. If the situation doesn’t improves, please post your file so I can check it.

Yes, brother, I checked the axes and that was it… they were misaligned. In fact, I’m also leaving the file here… but I have a question… is it possible to tell Cinema that even if it’s misaligned, to only rotate the “y” axis, for example? Because there are situations where the pivot needs to be misaligned… otherwise, I would have to bring all the objects to zero, fix their axis, and then take them like a child in the hierarchy to return them far to their position… that’s why I’m asking if… even when it’s misaligned, can we LOCK the axes that we don’t want to rotate in the timeline? … thanks again.

The axis misaligned only affects if you select more than one object and record their rotation in the timeline, but if the objects are under Null Object so you will not need to make it aligned, I opened the file you sent and it works fine without any wobble! as the screen recording below, did you make any changes to the axis locations or to the workspace?

sorry for delay…. I think I’ve solved it by aligning the axis and the axes first… I just want to know if it’s possible to lock an axis, like putting a little lock on it before rotating? Is that possible?

No worries! yes, you can lock an axis by pressing Ctrl and double-clicking on the axis the axis color will turn yellow or white in the last versions then you can unlock it again in the same way Ctrl double-click as in the screen recording below, let me know if that works for you.

You are welcome, Mauricio! As for R24 I’m not on my pc now but I think what’s different is not holding Control with the double-click to lock or unlock, I’m not sure.

Hey Kouraib, thanks again… I went to test it, and yes… it works on Mac Ventura with the key pressed and double-clicked. And what’s more… the amazing thing is that it shifts and rotates the axis, which is why I started this post. And on the timeline, IT WORKED… wow, amazing, awesome… once again, very grateful… blessings!!!! Kouraib
