  • Problem with video files in Sony Vegas 7d on 64 bit system (old huffyuv codec doesn’t work)

Posted by Marcos Barahona on November 14, 2011 at 11:42 am

    Hello fellows,

I’ve been working for several years with Sony Vegas 7D. I had plug ins installed like Pixelan, Magic Bullet Looks 2 and other 32 bit plug ins.

As my old computer was very low, (I had Win Xp, 1 GB), I decided to buy a new one. Now I got a nice new Win 7 with 8 gb ram and 64 bit.
    Now we meet my problem:
As I want to be able to use my ram fully, I bought Sony Vegas 10 (64 bit) I tried to open my old project of Sony Vegas 7, the project opened, but then it crashed saying something about plug ins missing and file codecs.

So I decided to install Sony Vegas 7 again on my 64 bit system with all the plugins I used to have. Everything was fine, I could install all the plug ins, open Sony vegas and apply them to layers. (Solid Layers)
But when I opened my old project, all my footage was offline.
I read on some forums that it might be the codec of the files, and I remember that I’ve saved ALL my footage with virtual dub as uncompressed using huffyuv 2.2.1 (or some version around that)

I installed the 32 bit vesion of huffyuv, but it didnt help me out, so I deinstalled it and installed the newes huffyuv 64 bit codec. The weird thing now is that the media was still offline in sony vegas 7, but now I was able to open up my project with Sony Vegas 10. The only thing it mentioned that plug ins are missing. The machine meant : Magic Bullet, I used it VERY often in this project.
I’ve done again some research and I learned that there is no Magic Bullet looks 2 for 64 bit. (I’ve just heard it might be soon released for Sony Vegas)

When I apply GSpot on a video file, it tells me: Codec: HFYU NAme: Huffyuv Lossless Codec Status: Codec(s) are NOT Installed. Whatever version I install on my computer, 32bit or 64, it says everytime the same.
If I put the video file in virtual dub and rerender it uncompressed, I can import it in Sony Vegas 7, what I usually can not do with my old footage (all the footage is offline, and old footage can’t be draged onto the timeline)

So to sum up what I got now:

I got a Sony Vegas 7 version, where I can open up my project, where all footage is offline, and I can’t import old footage into timeline. But I got here all my old plug ins working.

And Sony Vegas 10, when huffyuv 64 bit installed, I can open up my project, all footage is there, I could work with it, but all my effects with the old plugins are gone (which is really crucial!)

And to rerender all the files would be really time consuming as it’s about 329 GB (about 3.429 video files) (If there is a script, I might think about it as soon as I’ve a fresh Harddrive)

I think the main problem is the codec, but whatever codec I install, it wont help me out to open it in Sony Vegas 7, wich would be the best thing for me. I’ve also installed the previous K-Lite Codec pack, it did’nt help. I think it’s all regulated by the huffyuv codec. The old one, with which the files where rendered, isn’t recognized by me new system.

I would really appreciate some help. I put really SO much effort in this project, it would be really sad if I couldn’t finish this.

    Many thanks
    Best regards

[Marcos Barahona] “I’ve also installed the previous K-Lite Codec pack, it did’nt help. “

The codec-paks are probably what’s causing your problem. Never install a coec-pak on a video editing computer. Considering that you installed HuffYUV and GSpot doesn’t think it’s installed, I’d say there is something seriously wrong with your computer configuration. I would uninstall the codec-paks but the damage may have already been done.

HuffYUV should work fine with your Vegas 7. Of course, Vegas 7 isn’t supported on Windows 7 64-bit so your best move is to get Vegas Pro 10 working properly with your footage and get upgrade your plug-ins. You can use Vegas Pro 10 32-bit with Magic Bullet just fine.

    Hello John,

I installed the k-lite codec plug in at the very end, when anything else didn’t work. I dont think that the codec caused the problem.

I’m going to try to install sony vegas 10 32 bit and report my results.
    I hope it works.

    Hello John,

I’ve tried now to open up my project on a 32 bit version of Sony Vegas 11. Right after I open up my project it says that it got an error while opening my project. The error is that it can’t open up a codec. I can still open up my project with the 64 bit version. What shall I do? Shall I uninstall my current huffyuv codec (64bit) and install the one I used to work with? I dont understand this problem. I always thought if you work with 64 bit, it would automatically accept 32 bit too. How shall i proceed? The positiv aspects are now that all the plugins work on the Sony Vegas 11 32 bit version.

Something must be done to get this codec work!

If you use the 32-bit version of Vegas you need the correct 32-bit codecs installed. If you use the 64-bit version of Vegas you need the correct 64-bit codecs installed. Each version uses the codecs for it’s own architecture (32/64).

    Hi John,

So I have now a sony vegas 11 32 bit. I can apply all my old plug ins I used to use in vegas 7. I’ve also installed huffyuv 2.2.0 (32bit)
If I import the file it still says it can’t open up my file. G spot recognizes that the avi file has the huffyuv codec on it, but says it isn’t installed? Why? In my programm lists, it says it is installed?

Obviously, I would prefer I could handle somehow that codec problem, but this seems to be desperate.
Is there maybe a workaround? I really dont want to recompress all my files (about over 800 videofiles). Is there a chance, if I setup win 7 32 bit on another hard drive, that it would work on that one?
    Many thanks,

    OK, I got the solution:

    https://wiki.treet.tv/Sony_Vegas_Pro_and_Windows_Setup

Just at the end of the page they tell us how to install the codec properly.

Just in case someone got the same problem, I share this and hope I can help. Many thanks to you John, you helped me very much!
    Here it is:

Installing HuffYUV in Windows 7 64bit systems

The following steps are necessary to install the HuffYUV codec under Windows 7 64 bit systems.

    1. Unzip the files it to your C: drive.

    2. Open up a command prompt (DOS box), while logged in with a user account that has administrative privileges (go to the Start menu, and in the command box type in cmd and then press ctrl+shift and then press enter while still holding ctrl+shift. If you’ve done it correctly, then the little black DOS box will say “Administrator: Command Prompt” in the on-screen text.

    3. Assuming your copy of Windows was installed with the standard method (C:Windows), navigate to the SysWOW64 folder (in the little black DOS box, type cd c:windowssyswow64 and then press enter).

    4. Again, in the DOS box, type rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:huffyuv.inf and press enter. Pay close attention to the spacing. And that’s a “zero” in the last half of the command, not the letter “O”. There’s no space around that comma.

Wow that’s a lot go through just to get it to install correctly but thanks for posting back and letting everyone know the solution.
