  • Problem with Motion 5 templates in the FCPX timeline.

Posted by Giuseppe Mangione on April 17, 2014 at 3:45 am

I created a Motion 5 Title template and published in FCPX.
It appears in the title browser and I used this template as a clip in the timeline of a project.

Then I do some changes to the template in Motion 5. This changes will appear immediately in the file in the title browser, but not in the clip in the timeline.

But after I close and re-open the library that include the project, this changes will appears on the clip in the timeline.

    Doesn’t it seem strange?
Is this a bug? Someone can give me an explanations of this behavior?

I would like to have the changes I did in motion appears immediately on the timeline. But why only I close and re-open the library?

I really don’t like to much this way of working with template with FCPX and Motion 5.

I preferred the old roundtripping of FCP7 and Motion5… until someone will explain me better, or Apple will change something.

    Thanks.

    Ciao

It’s not supposed to update the template already in the timeline.

However, if you replace the template in the timeline with the new one, it should update to the new one and retain any text. Other variables will be reset.

Of it autimatically updated the timeline versions, then any change would screw up any timeline that ever used the effect in the past. That wouldn’t be good.

This is a link from apple help on motion 5,
    https://help.apple.com/motion/mac/5.0/en/motion/usermanual/index.html#chapter=11%26section=12

at the bottom of the page it says:

Note: When a preset Final Cut Pro generator is applied to the Final Cut Pro Timeline and then modified in Motion, the saved changes do not affect instances of the template in the Final Cut Pro Timeline. However, after the modified version of the preset is applied to the Final Cut Pro Timeline, any subsequent changes made in Motion to the template affect instances of the generator in the Final Cut Pro Timeline.

So it means that any changes will be affect the clips in the timeline.
But only after you close and re-open the project.

    is this strange?
