What is the codec of these? Are you using the Media Browser?

The guide below should probably help you with the purpose of the media browser, and will particularly help with your issue of using AVCHD in CS4.

I vaguely remember AVCHD being a little funny with some of the older versions of Premiere. Even now, my workflow when using AVCHD is to transcode the files to Cineform (I install the GoPro/Cineform software so that the codecs are installed, then do the actual trascoding in Adobe Media Encoder).
