  • Problem with following Rick Gerards aperture tutorial, guides not visible after import

I was going through Rick Gerard’s tutorial entitled, “Making a Real Aperture: Or how I learned to stop worrying and love illustrator” Everything was going just fine until I imported my Blade.ai into the composition in After Effects. When I got it there, It was no longer 400×400, but rather it was the size of the blade itself “174×202”. I didn’t really think much about that, but when I switched back over to the tutorial in my browser, I noticed one big discrepancy. My guides were no longer visible! I checked to be sure that the guide layer was still there, and sure enough it was. I tried clicking on View in AE and selecting show guides, but it was already so. I tried all sorts of things. All I can figure is that I did something wrong before I got to the point of saving the file in Illustrator, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what it was. I wouldn’t worry about it, except for the fact that it would be a whole lot easier to rotate the blades properly if those guides were still present. Please help:)

I did this tutorial the other day after Kathryn kindly pointed it out for me. I think what you need to do is make a 400×400 square (outline only) in the same layer as your blade in Illustrator, then drop the opacity of the square to 1%. The blade layer will then import into After Effects at the correct size

    Thanks for the idea:)
I finally figured out what I did wrong(or at least, what I think I did wrong) When I first made the guide layer, I converted the circles and the star to guides. And in doing that, they did not remain intact in the finished product, of course. I wasn’t thinking about that when I did it. So I went back and added the same elements of top of the guides in the guide layer and left them as objects. When I saved that, it all went to the new composition just fine. Now , i’m just fussing with After Effects, trying to figure out how to get it all just the way I want it, as the tutorial is honestly a little more advanced than my present skill, but that never stopped me before:) I will keep banging away at it until I have it just like I want it, then I’ll figure out how to apply that to a rectangle just larger than a banner ad in addition to the circle. All of this is for an interactive website menu interface I’m working on. The apertures will simply be a cover for the main animated menu and the rotating banner ad area. If anyone has any ideas for a really effective way to integrate all of that, let me know.
    Thanks again!
