Activity Forums Avid Media Composer problem with audio output

  • problem with audio output

Posted by Susan Kline on February 15, 2008 at 8:10 pm

I’ve been having a problem with the audio output in my sequences. I’ve imported from Mini DV tapes, both the video and the audio tracks and I can see activity in the audio meter in the timeline. But when I play back the sequences I don’t get the sound. Yes, the video and audio tracks are highlighted in the timeline.

My computer monitor’s speaker is working just fine as I get sound on other applications.

    Any suggestions?

Is the timeline speaker icon turned on? You say you see the audio meters moving – is this during capture or playback? What is your sample rate of the project you are working in? What is the sample rate of your tape?

The audio meters move during playback of a sequence and the speaker icon is not muted. I can even export to sequence to a Quicktime movie and have the sound play on that, but just not in Avid.

    Sample rate is 48kHz.

…And you’ve captured and heard audio before within Avid?

Please post your system specs (Computer, OS, RAM, video and audio card, Avid version, QT version…)

    Hi Jon,

3.07 gigahertz Intel Xeon (2 installed)
    8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: Supermicro X5DAL PCB Version

    Sony SDM-X95F/K [Monitor] (19.1″vis, s/n 6601457, August 2005)

    Quicktime version 7.2.0.240
Avid XPress Pro HD Version 5.2.1- Academic Version

    Avid Technology Mojo
    Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)
    Digidesign MBox

When I first took this position and started learning Avid, I could capture and hear the audio. Now for some reason I can’t. I’ve tried unhooking and re hooking up the decks I use and I’ve also tried capturing from the camera to Avid.

And I get sound from the monitor speaker when I listen to streaming online radio (I don’t use it when I have Avid running).

Try rolling your QTversion back to 7.0. Thats the version that will work with your version of Avid.

I rolled back to Quicktime 7.0.4 and still have the same problem in Avid with the audio output. I can export to Quicktime movies and even get these sequences on DVD with sound but I’m still not getting anything in Avid.

I’m wondering now if there is some weird issue with my monitors? I’m going to try and find a set of external speakers to hook up today.

You said earier your sample rate was set at48k. Avid XPress defaults to 48k, but are you sure the tapes were shot in 48k? AFAIK, VX100 cameras are set to a sample rate of 32k and can’t be changed. You’ll be able to capture, but until you set the audio project rate to 3200, you won’t be able to hear anything.

As an experiment, try setting the sample rate to 32k and see what happens.

    I’ll try that today. But…

Another problem has emerged with this. I saw on avid’s website that there was a free update available. So I downloaded it and am now running 5.2.4. The odd thing is that now the volume speaker button on the time line is now grayed out. It used to show up in black but now the thing looks disabled. Is something in my operating system blocking this feature? This is so frustrating.

I would roll back the update until you figure out why you are not getting audio. Adding another variable will only make it harder to diagnose what is going on.

Do you know what camer produced the footage?
