  • Problem when adding video effects

Posted by John Gallagher on December 10, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Hi folks, hope you’s all well.
I have a bit of an irksome problem when adding video effects to my footage. When playing the unaltered footage in the timeline it plays smoothly without interruptions. However, if I tinker with the fast colour correction or sharpen it or any kind of vid effect, the footage becomes jumpy or just freezes for several frames at a time. There is no problem when I play the altered footage in the source monitor or go through it frame by frame, and if I remove the effects, the problem goes away.
    Any suggestions would be welcomed.
    Cheers.

    Hi John,

We don’t know what kind of computer hardware you are running, or even what version of Premiere, but what you are seeing means that the computer cannot process the video for realtime playback with the effect applied, so you are getting a reduced frame rate playback.

You should be seeing a red line above the video clip, telling you that the effect requires rendering. Hit the ENTER key to render the segment. It will then turn green and should play back smoothly

Hi Jeff, Firstly thanks for your prompt reply, much appreciated. Sorry for not giving you enough detail, I was a bit hasty. It’s Premiere Pro CS5 and as for my laptop hardware, do you mean the fact that it’s 64 bit or is there something else? I’m a bit of a fledgling when it comes to this but always willing to learn something new.
Anyway, I’ve tried your solution and its working fine, thank you very much.
    Cheers,
    John
