Problem to link Videocopilot Optical Flare to E3D Element
Posted by Claude Rozsa on May 21, 2020 at 9:50 amGood Morning
I’m Trying to link the exhaust thrust made with Optical flare, to my Element 3D Spaceship. I followed two tutorials without success. When I pan the camera in any direction the flare stay at the right place on the ship…..In the end there should be 9 flares to be linked to there 9 respective exhausts. Where is my mistake?
Thanks for any help.

May 23, 2020 at 9:30 amYour optical flares layer is patented to a 2D element position layer. So it’s shifting the layer not the effect. Unparent it and recentre the optical flares layer.
Did you use the utilities option in Element to a 3D null for your engine? That’s the data you need to use to link your flare to.
Your Engine thrust looks cool by the way.

Thanks for the explanation, but I think I really don’t get it right ; here are my settings; obviously when I move the ship along its path ( I don’t move the camera) the flare doesn’t follow. Do I have to use after setting the element NULL with the Utilities option, to go and set up the GROUP Utilities too?? I’m really lost with those different set up and the tutorials I watched don’t make it clear either….
Thanks for your explanations.

May 23, 2020 at 1:12 pmOK, let me try again.
With your 3D model, if you haven’t already, create a World Position NULL

Then, in Utilities, use the Generate 3D Position options to create a 3D NULL on your engine.

Parent this new Element Position NULL to the World Position NULL.
Create a new Light, and parent this to the Element Position NULL, making sure to zero out its position.
Then, in Optical Flares, (without parenting the layer to anything) make sure the Positioning Mode is set to Track Lights.

May 23, 2020 at 1:14 pmOk; Got it and of course I was missing the whole point. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I have done so.

May 23, 2020 at 2:06 pmI’m going crasy!LOL!
Here is the position of the flame of the exhaust just before setting the optical flare’s option to “Track lights”.After setting optical flare to track light the flare goes down near the right border of the image, little orange point above “active camera”….
I followed your instructions to the letter. We agree that the presence of a camera doesn’t affect the method in any way; the exhaust is an optical flare with a liquify effect. I use a paralell light
