Problem Recording DnxHD via HDMI with a Canon 5D mk III.
Hi everybody !
I’m studying cinema in France and i got a 5d mk III with an hyperdeck shuttle 2 to record images in Quicktime DnxHD. I did some trials yesterday and it was not really good… I was shooting also in H.264 on the card to compare images after. I was surprised cause the dnxhd images looked bader than the h.264 : more noise, green color etc.. The DnxHD is supposed to have more color informations doesn’t it ? Thats why i don’t understand !
Please Help me guys ..

The camera shoots 8 bit clean out the HDMI port with firmware v1.2.1. Capturing to DnxHD which is 10 bit won’t give you any more color information. It will however not be as compressed as h.264.

Thanks for your help… But can you explain me why the DNxHD looks bader than the H.264 since it is less comrpessed ?

What flavor of DnxHD are you recording. There are various forms of compressions in this codec as well.

There are different compressed versions of DnxHD (flavors). DnxHD 36, 145, etc. The higher the number the less compression.

Problem is i don’t have choice with the hyperdeck. My choices are Uncompressed Quicktime, Apple Prores 422 and DNxHD.I did not try the first one yet.
