problem: my colour is flat
Posted by Martha Stiegman on April 26, 2011 at 1:21 amhi everyone
i’m on my first shoot with the sony ex1r – i’m viewing the footage we shot today in the xdcam ex clip browser and the color looks quite flat and desaturated. i can’t find any settings in the manual or on the camera that would have created that effect. has any one encountered this problem?thanks

April 26, 2011 at 1:54 amPicture Profile. If you haven’t touched them it defaults to STD3 (Standard Curve 3) which looks very flat.
Read about Picture Profiles in the manual although it really doesn’t tell much about them. See about page 71 on in the camera PDF manual.Alister Chapman has a good basic overview on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-9aaK2gefgYou can use the Matrix setting in the PP and set to HighSat and even dial up the Saturation up.
Here’s his video on Color Matrix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gerb8QjfeASony has some tips relating to using Picture Profiles on their site.
https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.demos.bbsccms-assets-micro-xdcamex-latest-ShootingTipsIndex.shtmlAll is not lost even with your flat image because the standard setting should still give some latitude to color grad the image.

The viewer of the Clip Browser on your screen is not a reference for color.
Download your QT files and try to have a look in a decent monitor.

April 28, 2011 at 1:44 pmThe camera ships flat. If you have vortex media’s DVD, he gives you some user profile presets. You can also find a lot of user profiles online and some in camera.
It’s best to shoot one scene multiple times with each profile so you can see the difference and be educated as to which one works best for your shooting location.
