  • Problem Limiting texture with alpha

I’ve got a spaceship that has a shiny red material on it, but on top of that I want to apply smoke black to look like smoke marks from the exhaust. I’ve got a material stacked on top of my red material, and it has a black color, and then noise mapped into the transparency channel so that some parts are black, and some show through to the red material underneath. The problem is, this covers my whole ship, now I was hoping to use a gradient to just limit the black noise to the rear of the ship, but I can’t figure out a place I can map the gradient texture, because I’ve already got noise mapped to the alpha.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Use a layer shader in the second material’s alpha channel. Set the top layer to your noise, the second layer to your gradient, with transfer mode set to “layer mask”, and the bottom layer as a color shader with the color set to black. Make sure you uncheck “image alpha” in the main alpha channel settings.
