  • Problem after converting .vob to .mov or .mpg for FCP

Posted by Albert Clack on November 9, 2009 at 5:51 pm

    Hello!

Usually the only video editing I do is of material I’ve shot myself, so it always originates from the same format – miniDV tape.

But I’ve been asked to edit some clips together for a friend of a friend who’s an actor, and these originate from dvds and are thus .vob.

I’ve converted a sample clip, using free software called Any Video Converter, to .mpg and also .mov. These both play ok in the FCP Viewer (although .avi doesn’t, I get a blank), but when I drag a clip into the timeline and then play it in the canvas window, it appears as a small rectangular picture in the middle. I can pull that out to fill the canvas using wireframe, but I guess that’s only a change of view, as when I export the sequence as an edited mpeg I’ve got that little picture in the middle again.

Can anybody tell me, please, (a) what I’m doing wrong that turns the clip into that little image, and, (b) which is the best format to convert to in the first place to preserve as much quality as possible?

    Thanks!

    Hi there.

I always edit in uncompressed 8-bit (Pal, or Ntsc). It’s a fairly highscale resolution. i suppose the small image in your canvass is due to your sequence pre-sets (maby). If your FCP is a elder vesion (5.0) the sequence does not adjust to the clip, when dragging it onto the timeline.

So my advise! Match the sequence to the clip.
NEVER use mpeg in fcp. it always bring me problems. Use a .mov -Fcp is quicktime based.
