  • “ProApps Quicktime Codecs” V. 1.0 update… using FCP7 do it or no?

Posted by Maxwell Federman on July 15, 2011 at 2:32 am

So in a Software Update scan I’m seeing this update prompt:

    ProApps Quicktime Codecs Version 1.0

I am NOT using FCP X, and have not changed my Motion or Compressor besides updates for the FCP Studio 3 releases.

The summary of the update is confusing because I have already used most these codecs listed here on my system.

I have some important projects going in both FCP 7 and Media 100 Suite and don’t want to do this update especially if I don’t need it–

Thanks for reading this– just looking to see what some of you experts think about this update before it causes any time-eating problems.

    Thanks again,

    Max

good idea to check first. What version of everything are you currently on?

Another version of the codecs was released 5-6 days ago I see. Any known issues with this?

    I’m running FCP 7.0.3
    OSX 10.6.8
    QT 7.6.6

Did you ever get an answer? I have the same question. Did you download the update?

Kevin, I am running the same versions on my Mac system at work. Have you or has anyone performed this update smoothly along with FCS3?

Earlier this week I updated my Mac, and this ProApps update was included.

I have OS X 10.6.8 and FCP 7.0.3. After the update, a percentage of my raw MOV files became corrupt. The same thing happened to a colleague.

Anyone know if this is fixable? Anyone else have this problem? HELP!

I must have installed this update at home. I checked last night for my versions on my Home Mac Pro

OS X 10.7.2 and Final Cut Pro 7.0.3

I’m not sure if this is directly related but: now Qmaster / Compressor doesn’t even list “This Computer” nor will it render. I also receive an error that qmasterd isn’t running, and I can’t even stop the service or restart it.

I checked on the Apple Discussion Forums but might not have done enough digging. I might have to re install the Suite or do an OS wipe and re install everything. Argh!

Yeah, a clean install might be needed. I was on the phone for a free hour with Apple Support and they were confounded. I was the first to call in with the issue. Might be worth making a call to help build their case.

The first suggestion was to uninstall the FCP studio suite (using AppZapper, a third party app), and then reinstall.

If that didn’t work, wipe the drive and do a fresh OS install.

I’m finishing up another project before I try either. Will post my results here.

    Thanks, Thomas.

Correction, the Mac at work is also running 10.7.2 and NOT 10.6.8 as I initially stated. Running FCS Suite 3/FCP 7.0.3 though.

I keep my Home Mac pretty clean, so doing a re install wouldn’t be a big deal for me. Though I am just about to start a new project so I’m glad I found issues now rather than later.

    Problem finally solved.

I realized that of all my footage on my drives, only the footage that I shot with my Focus Enhancements FS-C DTE recorder was effected. A simple email to Focus solved the issue. They were aware of the errors and sent me a DMG patch file that fixed my footage.

Alternatively (before I heard back from Focus) I downloaded the Emicsoft VLC Video Converter for Mac, which was able to play my footage and convert them to FCP-ready files.

It looks like I spoke too soon. The ProApps update on my home system that I’ve mentioned before seems unaffected. I exported some FCP projects to x264 as I usually do and I haven’t seen any problems post-update.

For others the mileage may vary but I haven’t run into any issues actually. Not sure what was going on with my system before but everything seems okay right now.
