April 22, 2008 at 5:59 pmNo, sorry Andy, that doesn’t help. I’m really confused now. Are you saying that if I’m working in a DV sequence with rendering set to ProRes, the final rendered file will be DV, not ProRes?
..and why, when you select ProRes as the rendering codec in Sequence settings, does it say HDV and XDCAM only? -

April 22, 2008 at 6:15 pmJust tried it with an XDCAM clip in an XDCAM timeline rendering to Pro Res. Yes it will play over a firewire if you change the Easy Setup to Firewire Basic, but the image is so degraded as to be unusable.

Because that’s the only codec you need this type of functionality for. ProRes becomes an intermediate codec so you don’t have to deal with HDV rendering. All other i-frame codecs don’t require this as they work just like ProRes in terms of their i-framiness.

I would assume it’s for preview purposes only, like if you don’t have a capture card to monitor with but still needed to get an image out to a monitor via firewire/dv deck.

April 22, 2008 at 9:00 pmSo, if I have a graphics-heavy DV project, it won’t give me a better result to render with ProRes over using the DV codec?

April 22, 2008 at 9:40 pmChris, when using a dv timeline, you cannot render to the ProRes codec. You must edit in a ProRes timeline and yes it will help your graphics.

April 23, 2008 at 9:47 pmthought to say prores is made mainly for HD and firewire output you are seeing is SD downconvertion in FCP6
maybe this is useful to help with some of this stuff
https://cowcast.creativecow.net/podcast/final-cut-pro-open-format–213wasnt aware prores downconverted in same way a HDV must be a recent upgrade cause I remember it only being HDV when fcp6 got first released
