  • Pro 17 can’t open a Pro 12 template project?

Posted by Willie Bobo on January 13, 2020 at 5:21 pm

I can understand why 12 wouldn’t be able to open a 17 project but not the opposite.
I have a template I created years ago in 12 (lower 3rds) opening graphics, music, etc.
I use it to import a weekly church service.
I tried to open in 17 and it complained it couldn’t find the files so I showed it the first one thinking Vegas would state it found the rest of the files in that folder and ask if would I like to use them (as Vegas has been capable of doing for years).
Instead it complained it couldn’t find the next one (out of like 20) and I had to show it every single file.
Finally I got through all of them and Vegas stated it couldn’t open the project because the files are incompatible.
These are mostly .mov files…can someone tell me what the heck is going on?

    Hi Randy

Had to ask ’cause I also run Vegas 12 but on an other computer. Do you get the same message from V17 for other types of files or only with .MOV files ?

Just trying to eliminate the obvious possibilities before I tell you to wipe V17 from your computer, then run a program like CCleaner to (sorta) clean the registry and then re-install. Sometimes it does do the trick.

    Cheers !

    Hi Randy,

(Quote from Magix Vegas Pro forum:)
    From another thread:

It is very possible that these files require QuickTime to load. The QuickTime plugin in VEGAS Pro 17 has been turned off as QuickTime is no longer supported on Windows. You may, however, reactivate the QuickTime plugin by going to Preferences and selecting the “Deprecated” tab. From there you can turn on the QuickTime plugin if you still need it.

I just re-opened the project and it appears it is only the mov files it won’t load.
Also I tried to drag mov files onto a blank timeline and that doesn’t work either.
    Thanks,
    Randy

    Hi Randy

Everything seems to point towards a problem with Quicktime. Now, this is just a educated guess on my part but I suspect that your problem lies with the introduction of the codec for ProRes in V14. In prior versions, you needed to download Apple QuickTime in order to import and create ProRes files. There would seem to be a conflict between the 2 codecs.

Maybe if you uninstall Quicktime it may work… Let us know what happens.

    Cheers !

Do you mean uninstall and reinstall or just uninstall?
    Thanks very much,

    Hi Randy

Uninstall only. This so we can see if there is a conflict between the 2 codecs.

Thanks so much, I will do that and report back within a couple of days (grandkids and daughter flying in tomorrow).
That said, I think you’ve discovered the issue as I pulled out the new GPU earlier and put the old one back in (trying to resolve my render time issue in another thread) and got the same error.
    Thanks again,
    Randy

Did you follow Bill Burnette advice by going to Preferences and selecting the “Deprecated” tab. From there you can turn on the QuickTime plugin?
That should be what is causing some issue.
