Print to tape
Posted by Damien Sanville on November 11, 2007 at 8:02 pmHi,
I need to back up clips from my hard drive on to tape.
I am wondering if there is any re-compression if I am ‘printing to tape’ (DV-PAL tape that is) a clip which was set on Ucompressed 10bit?
Also, if I needed to recapture them in the future, should I set the capture settings on Uncompressed 10bit or DV-PAL?Thanks

November 12, 2007 at 2:59 amIf your clips are originally DV and you put them into an uncompressed timeline, then they will take another DV compression hit when you lay them back to tape.

I’d like to clarify this:
– My source material is DV PAL as well as my capture and seq. settings. After editing and applying effects to the clip (color / fades in and out / speed change / deinterlace etc.) do I lose any quality if ‘Print to tape’ the sequence back on to DV tape?
– After adding effects on DV PAL seq. from DV pal source material, is it better to set seq. on ‘Uncompressed 10bit’, render and then export it as QT self contained movie, or to export it using QT conversion set on ‘Uncompressed 10bit’?
– Also: how can I output Uncompressed clips from hard drive without re-compressing them to DV tape? Is Beta SP the best option?
Thanks for your patience

No, if you go firewire back to DV tape, you are getting a digital clone of your timeline.

If you are always going to go back to DV as your master tape, you are accomplishing nothing using this method. Just export as DV and you will have an identical clone to your original project.
