  • Preview/Program Monitor Recommendation

I have the CS4 Production Premium running on a Windows 7 System with a PNY GeForce GTX285 graphics card. I also have the Matrox RT.X2 installed in the system.

I am going to purchase a LCD TV for external previewing. I need a true HD preview. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good TV? I want to calibrate it and therefore need to be able to turn off any “color correction” or “auto” adjustment settings.

What is the best way to set up this monitor? I believe if I plug into my Matrox card DVI port then I can only preview Matrox sequences on the external screen. Is this correct? If so what is the best way to get a true preview monitor for all my different projects (NTSC 4:3, NTSC 16:9, AVCHD, and other various project types)?

Before you consider purchasing a TV vs an actual broadcast monitor, you should look at what you will actually be using it for.

Good calibration of a TV set can only be done by someone with expensive calibration hardware (and hourly rates). TV colors also aren’t very stable over time.

If you are taking a DVI feed you are also getting a cleaned signal that will not show some of the artifacts that actually are in the picture, like banding and noise.

If you do any on location monitoring, then start looking at HD monitors. JVC makes some pretty inexpensive ones, you slap it on a C-stand for shooting and take it back to your edit area when needed.

I do use a TV for client reviews and I like the Panasonic plasmas best. They are also pretty cheap these days with all the LCD vs plasma war.
