  • ‘Preview Disabled’–Unable to locate capture device—very trying

So, o.k., on a .2 up date, if you (Apple) wanna change names from the Capture Preset DVCPro50, to DV50 I can follow.

But why, mid way thru the project can I not capture? First 4 of 1 hr tapes no prob. Set Panasonic 1200a to remote, pop in a tape, cap preset to DV 50 and away we go.

But today, come in, fire up system and deck—-
‘Preview Disabled’ and ‘Unable to locate capture device…’ but yet, key board controls will
play and rewind. Time code shows in the captue window and counts up and down. Just
‘Preview Disabled’ where picture used to be.

I’ve tried every single cap preset, but nada.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks p2

Perhaps you didn’t save the settings on the deck? You have to make sure your 1200a is setup to output dv50 and not dv or dvcpro hd.

    no luck. Same thing.

I mean—how can things change from working fine, to Preview Disabled and what not just by quitting work for the weekend, turning machines off then back on Monday and this?

It won’t play thru video of tape that’s already been captured.

But, as I’m using the 1200a for play back and display, works fine.

Yet equal shovels of damn no doubt go to Apple and Panasonic. Forget trying to get any help from either.

It can be frustrating sometimes, I hear you.

Turning the 1200A on and off sometimes releases certain settings if they weren’t saved before powering down. Also, double check your av settings in the bottom of the view menu and refresh av devices. Sometimes it takes a few times to get it to stick.

Try this. Shut down everything. Turn off the deck. Turn on the deck, then turn on your computer. Launch FCP and resetup the easy setup.

SInce it worked once, we will get it to work again.

    Did you try trashing preferences?

I went through hell with this deck a few months back. It was the flakiest device I ever used. The main problem was it would NOT downsample to DV25 as advertised (not even a panny tech could get it to work) so I had to go with full-res capture and that was flaky at best, also.

Thing is, I was working on Avid Media Composer, so it’s not Final Cut Pro that’s the problem. It’s the deck. You can probably search out my posts on the Pan and Avid forums here.

Well, dunno why, but shut everything down and started back up as suggested.

Bingo. Working. Thanks. I’ll write that down somewhere.

    What the f**k, over?

I owned that deck for 2 1/2 years. It downconverts just fine to DV25. You just have to make sure all the menu settings are correct, especially those in the 800 menus.

The flakiest part of the entire deck for us was just mastering to tape. But capturing, deck control and down-convert all worked as advertised so long as all the menu settings were correct.

When you make changes to certain menus, the deck requires a full power down and re-start to re-initialize.

Sometimes re-setting the deck to Factory Default and starting again from there was a good place to start. We had to do that from time to time.

They’ve definitely made a lot of improvements to the 1400 as that is more of a studio pro VTR. I think the 1200A was really not designed for NLEs but more for Varicam users to have the ability to roll longer tapes. We just “made it work” in the NLE world and hopefully all my griping about no RS-422 control during Edit To Tape was at least in some part responsible for the 1400 having this ability.

    Walter,

I can tell you 100% for sure I went through *every* possible menu configuration, including the one that Panasonic recommended. I talked to one tech on the phone and then another came out to the site and tried re-seating the FW card inside the deck, etc, but that didn’t work either. We finally decided to go full-res for capture.

Then, I spoke to another person in town with the same deck that wasn’t having any success, either.

So if you were having success, this tells me maybe there was a bad batch or something.

as I said before. Just went home Fri. pm. Came back to mosheen and project this a.m.

No settings changed. Deck, project, nothing. 2 hrs wasted w/client sitting here while nothing’s happening.

Once again, this board’s saved my butt and many wasted hours, and for that I’m eternally
    thankful and grateful.

It’s difficult enough in these times of multiple formats and getting ’em to play happy happy together without wasting so much time for no reason.

What do YOU say when the client meets you the next morning and nothing’s changed yet nothing’s working and you don’t know why…? And you’ve lost 2 – 3 hrs of billable time.
