December 10, 2007 at 8:46 pmUhh, roger WTF heard loud and clear.
The last time I worked with DVCProHD via firewire (it was the 1400) it was a real pain to keep the thing connected if I was doing something in another program or moved to the desktop or whatever. FCP couldn’t really keep track of it, and this was when everything was left on. It was a constant battle to keep the deck connected. This was before the ioHD and I was on the road doing some capturing and editing with a MacBook Pro. Not only that, there’s the weird firewire audio thing that happens when you lay back to DVCPro HD. Not real good there either.
My fix was to either shut it all down and start over (worked every time) or keep hitting refresh av devices until FCP finally woke up and saw the deck. Frustrating. I try to avoid firewire at all times if it can be at all helped. I understand that sometimes firewire is all there is.

December 10, 2007 at 8:59 pm[pSquared] “What do YOU say when the client meets you the next morning and nothing’s changed yet nothing’s working and you don’t know why…? And you’ve lost 2 – 3 hrs of billable time.”
You make it work one way or another. If that means renting a machine, you do that. Working late, you do that. Whatever it takes to please the client is all that you can do.
I’ve been there with clients, we all have. You have to make the best of a bad situation and keep the client placated while you address the situation. I’ve done complete edit sessions for no charge if something goes wrong that is no fault of the client.
How about have three, count them three, CalDigit SATA arrays eject themselves off your desktop while you’re sitting there with your client or trying to make a network deadline? Now there’s a lot of fun to tap dance around.
All I’m saying is that the 1200A did not cause any major issues here nor do I know of any major issues caused to folks that I recommended the machine to. We even worked around the timecode offset issue when mastering to tape. I’m not sure what is causing the issues in your case, but that machine was actually a very solid performer while we had it.
