I would really appreciate some help here. I’m a PP newbie, but a FCP editor for over 15 years. A Cow member forever!!

I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use preset transitions that I’ve downloaded in my sequence. I’ve downloaded the presets and they show up in the Effects browser but I can’t drag them in between 2 clips!!! The clips have adequate handles.

When I try to drag them between the two clips in my sequence nothing happens.

I’ve watched a few tutorials and still nothing works. One tutorial says to make blade cuts between the two clips, nest that area and then drag the the preset transition to the nest.

Another tutorial says to create an adjustment layer!!

You can’t possible need to create an adjustment layer or a nest every time you need to add a transition!!!

In FCP you just install the transitions and they show up in your effects panel. Then just drag them to the project edit points. SIMPLE!!!!

Can someone please help me with this? Thanks so much!!

    I’m on Premiere 22.0

Can you direct me to the ones you are referring to?

The only ones I’ve ever used for Premiere are the ones provided in a Sequence and need to be copied and pasted above the edits on a new track(s).

If you can’t drag these effects onto a transition but you can drag them onto a clip then these are not technically “transition” effects from the point of view of Premiere. They may be intended to create a visual transition, but technically they are clip effects, meant to be applied as an overlay on a higher track. Think traveling mattes. That’s what the nesting/adjustment layer instructions are for, applying an overlay clip effect above your transition.

Thanks. That helped. Any idea why I can’t trim an adjustment layer? When I go to the end of the layer and try and drag in left. Nothing happens.

That sounds odd (adjustment layer trim).

Can you use the cut tool on it?

    Nope. That does not work.

Adjustment layers should trim normally. I would assume the problem is something unrelated. Locked track. Disabled clip. Sync lock. Nesting. Possibly the specific effect applied to the layer.
