  • “Preparing” when rendering frame sequence

    Hello all,

I usually work over in the autodesk realm of software, but have recently been learning Cinema 4D for work and I’ve run into a rather confusing issue I’m hoping someone here can shed some light on.

I have a relatively simple project with a little animated machine that slides into frame and does some spins and such, and if I render a single frame C4D takes less than a minute to finish rendering. However, when I switch to rendering a frame sequence the picture viewer says it is “preparing” and renders odd grayscale versions of my frame on loop. I’ve watched it go through every frame of my animation twice but it never actually started rendering.

Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? Or is this preparing thing something C4D is supposed to do? I’m accustomed to Max or Maya where it just goes straight into rendering.

    Thanks in advance.

Sonds like you’re using global illumination. If so, and it’s not the physical renderer, the GI prepass has to be calculated before the final frames are rendered.

I am using GI and the physical renderer. I figured that might be what was happening, so I let it run for an hour and forty five minutes. It seemed to finish calculating the GI prepass, but then it just sat at a black screen and continued to say “preparing” without making any progress.

I then went back and disabled GI and it rendered just fine. So while I’ve narrowed the problem down to something with GI, it still seems to be getting locked up after it finishes the prepass. I’ll have to look further into the GI settings, but I will admit I’m a bit lost in there, in my past work I’ve always used mental ray and final gather rather than GI so I’m fairly unfamiliar with it.

Physical Renderer has its own “Indirect Illumination” section. Try using that instead of Global Illumination.

    Awesome, thanks!

That is rendering much more as I expected, and I can’t see much difference between the GI still renders I did and these new ones with the physical renderers indirect illumination.

    I appreciate the help everyone!

They both generally work the same. GI and Indirect are different in the way they’re excecuted. GI calculates prepass and all first, where as the physical renderer does it all at once, and also gives simpler controls on handling quality.
