  • Preparing FCP Media for FCSvr Upload

Hey everybody. I need some brainstorming help.

We’ve invested in Final Cut Server (*cue* long sigh) and need to get all of our media ready to upload. Here’s the problem. The projects from the past weren’t managed very well in terms of FCSvr-friendly media management. There are clips whose media files have the same name (you guessed it- Untitled), which can be dealt with pretty easily.

My main problem is full-length tape captures. Most projects have a good portion of a tape, or the entire tape, included in just one source clip. I know you can make subclips in FCP, but they all link back to the same source clip. Is there a way to segment the source clip into individual shots/takes within FCP without completely ruining the project and its sequences?

The only other option I’ve though of is recapturing the tape (which may need to be done for the simple fact that tape naming conventions weren’t used prior to my arrival), logging individual clips, and relinking them. This seems like it’d be the same as rebuilding the sequences from scratch.

Have we really just shot ourselves in the leg?

In your FCP projects, rename the clips in the brwoser from ‘Untitled” then right click on the clips and choose Rename > File to Match Clip.

I know that. I’m wondering what to do about the large source clips containing hundreds of individual shots that need to be independently uploaded as assets in Final Cut Server.

[Michael Cummins] “‘m wondering what to do about the large source clips containing hundreds of individual shots that need to be independently uploaded as assets in Final Cut Server.”

What do you mean? Why can’t you upload them? Do oyu mean you’d like to break them up in to individual shots…?

From now on, you should really log your tapes and then capture. I think you are starting to see the reason why.
