Premiere/Matrox craziness
I am normally a Mac/FCP editor, but I am using a Dell XPS with a Matrox RTX2. The problem I am having is that every time I bring in something new for a project (such as a simple JPEG), adding it to the project causes Premiere to instantly lock up for 2-3 minutes. After that time when it becomes responsive again, there is no image in the program window and I have to force-quit premiere and re-start it. It does let me save. This is happening EVERY TIME I bring something in. Is there something I am doing wrong??

Adding a .jpg to your timeline should have no impact at all…unless it is really huge, like some 10-megapixel image. Really, you want any graphics to be the same size as the project for best results, or close to it. If the image is much larger than the video, say 3000×2000 in a DV project, then yes, it could slow the system.
Matrox will work with many still formats, but I think 32-bit .tga is the favorite, and size should match video.

As the saying goes…..size doesn’t matter 🙂 I have tried images of various sizes, video clips, etc. Anything that comes in new causes the issue. I created a copy of one of the timelines and removed the video from it. I then dragged the images into the empty timeline with the same settings, and there was no issue. It appears to happen only if the image or video is placed over the matrox captured video.

Slight update. Even if the images aren’t put on a track above the video it still does the same thing. Basically, if there is Matrox captured video in the timeline at all, the issue comes up. Very weird.

With what operating system? XPS what? you need to give the specs, what version of Ppro? What version of the Matrox drivers?

It’s Windows 7, I believe it is an XPS 7100 series (or something similar…..it is huge, ugly and weighs about 4 tons 🙂
I have no idea on the drivers, nor do I even know how to find out. PPro CS4.

You need to hire somwone locally like a consultant or techie to look at your system. -
To find out the version of the Matrox drivers you have installed, please follow the steps below:
1- double-click the small blue “M” icon on the bottom-right of the Windows taskbar on the desktop. This will open the Matrox X.info applet.
2- Make sure that “system” is selected in the drop-down list of the “Display Information about” at the top of the X.info Dialog.
3- the Matrox driver version information is listed beside the “Matrox Mx.tools Version” field.
