    Hi everyone,

I’ve recently made the switch from FCP to CS 5.5, and for the most part am loving the features that the adobe software offers me. I work with a lot of different formats, but often shoot on RED, and have just completed 2 projects where I edited using the R3D files, which I found to be amazing, given the simplicity of the workflow.

Wanting to get the most out of my system I decided to purchase a GeForce GTX 285 Graphics card, to utilise the power of the Mercury Playback Engine. My system is a 2008 Mac Pro. I installed the card with no dramas, and both my displays are running fine. Premiere and After Effects are both launching without any problems, however, when working in Premiere I’m starting to get strange glitches in my Program window, as well as hang time when the “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration” is switched on. These problems disappear however, when I change back to “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only”.

    Thank you.
I also experience problems when I export both through Premiere itself, and when I send to Media Encoder. When exporting from Premiere, I get sporadic digital glitches, and through Media Encoder the program hangs mid output.

I have searched the web for others who may have experienced similar problems, but have come up empty handed. If anyone has encountered similar problems,or has any advice, I would be most appreciative.

My machine specs are Mac Pro Early 2008, 10GB Ram, GeForce GTX 285 Graphics card, which is running a 30″ and 24″ apple cinema displays. I’m running CUDA Driver Version: 4.1.25, and GPU Driver Version 7.12.9 270.05.10f03
I am running the latest update of Premiere 5.5, and since experiencing these problems have uninstalled and re-installed Premiere.

Hi, new user with very similar setup. You didn’t mention what OS version you are running. With 10.7.2 Lion you do not need any graphics driver, just the CUDA driver. Some users have had problems with the GTX 285 if they installed Nvidia drivers under Leopard, and then upgraded to Lion. If you did this, try uninstalling the Nvidia driver, as Lion provides a suitable driver (at least in 10.7.2). Hope this helps.

    Hi John,

Thanks, I am running Lion 10.7.2, and was running this prior to installing the card – however I did install a driver provided on disk with the card, before I installed the card, so maybe this has something to do with it. I’ll try unisnstalling the Nvidia driver as you’ve suggested and let you know how I go.
    Thanks for your reply,

    Myles.
