    Hi,

I’m not a newbie editor, but I recently switched my video podcasts from FCP7 to Premiere Pro 6.0.2.

Overall I love it, and the learning curve has not been anywhere near what I thought it would be. It helps that I’ve used After Effects and Photoshop for over 12 years.

But… I’m having frustrating issues with rendering & exporting. I will leave a render or export overnight, and it will stop partway (not always the same frame). When I try to cancel, I get a spinning beach ball and must force quit, losing my render.

It’s not even an HD project — the sequence settings are 640×360 ProRes 29.97fps, and I am working with relatively small 640×480 H264 videos (recorded through Quicktime Player or Skype), combined with relatively low rez stills and a few titles.

I should note that I have lots of FxFactory & Red Giant effects installed, though the only one I use on the podcasts is Magic Bullet Cosmo.

I end up rendering in chunks, and exporting telling Premiere to use the renders. This has happened on 3 different projects, so I know it’s not one specific file that’s doing it.

    My system:
    – 2010 Mac Pro 12-core 2.66 w/ 12GB RAM
    – Radeon HD 5870 / 1GB (will be upgrading soon to GTX 570 from MacVidCards)
    – Mac OS 10.7.5
    – Decklink Studio 2 & Matrox MXO2 Mini with Max
    – Premiere 6.0.2
    – Also have FCP7 and Avid Symphony 6 on same system, though I’m not currently using Symphony

    Thanks,
    Gray Jones.

    Hey,

My name is Alex and Im a qe at Adobe. I’m sorry that you have been facing these issues and that they have been slowing you down. I was curious if you have had a case yet where the problem did not occur and that it was able to render succesfully through the night?

If you were interested, I think it would be a great idea if maybe you could send us a problematic test project with media so that we could run the test on a clean system here to help further identify what might be causing the render to hang and the subsequent crash. I’ll look into this end in seeing how we could perhaps make it where you could send us that. Let me know when you can as I would love to help out and try and solve this.

    Best,

    Alex Pelfrey

    Hi Alex,

thanks for your quick reply! The file size would be huge, as the podcasts are 45 minutes long. I’m open to whatever you think I can test on my end.

Rendering in 5-10 minute chunks seems to work, so I’m not sure a small project would be able to isolate the problem.

What do you think I can do to test?

Incidentally, I’m not rendering with the maximum quality option. Also I should mention I use a custom ProRes sequence preset for my sequences, rendering, and exporting.

    Thanks,
    Gray.

    Hey Graham,

With info you posted, I am going to do the best I can to try and emulate your projects. I may need more info so I may be bothering you a bit more.

We have been brainstorming ideas about what may be happening. Out of curiosity, are you using the Adobe Media Encoder to export the podcasts? Hopefully from the test project I set up, I will be able to identify or at least rule out some possibilities.

Also if you would rather email me, my email is pelfrey@adobe.com

    Hi,

thanks! No, I don’t use the Adobe Media Encoder. This happens when I’m rendering a sequence, and also when I do a direct export from the program.

    I’ll email you directly.

    Thanks,
    Gray Jones.

Was there any resolution to this. I”m having the exact same problem. Randomly, the rending just stops. Then I hit cancel and get the spinning beach ball of death. I have to force quit the program then come back to find I have to start the render all over again. It’s taking me 4 hours to just render a SD timeline of 9 min.

    Hi,

no, I’ve had to abandon Premiere and go back to FCP7 because of this.

Adobe support has told me it probably has to do with the Red Giant plugins I have installed. Because I rely on them, I’m stuck for now with FCP7.

    Hope this helps,
    Gray.

Hmm While I have the red giant plugins installed. I’m not using any in this timeline.. I’m to far into this project to go back to FCP. Everything has worked great until I try to render previews or output. It’s not something that is repeatable ether. I’m stuck trying to render small work space sections and save after each successful part. It seems quite random as to where it’ll just stop and stay stuck at 1 frame. Very frustrating… BTW. I’ve had this problem in several projects. 🙁

I hate to be simplistic , but have you tried the basic Mac repairs…Trash Prefs and Repair Permissions (ONYX)?

Another repair is to delete all Media Caches and Preview files.

And lastly, create a new sequence like the old sequence. Then copy and paste the old timeline to the new timeline . I hope something here can help you.

I know this is thread is a bit old, but am wondering if this was ever resolved?

I recently started working with Premier Pro, and I’m find that it renders out just fine as well, until it comes to one clip it decides it doesn’t like and then it just stops.

Then, if that’s not bad enough, sometimes when I try to render just the effects in the work area the play head automatically starts playing!!!
So, I have to render the whole workspace, and then I’m back to square one.

I noticed it started to happen as soon as I applied a matte to a clip. So, I deleted the matte from the timeline and from the clip files, but still no dice.

I also rebooted just in case…and still no rendering possible.

It’s very frustrating not to be able to rely on your software, particularly when you have a project underway.

    Any advice is welcome!

    Thanks!

No, was never resolved for me. I tried all the usual things, like trashing prefs, reinstalling drivers and apps, and even was in touch with Adobe’s Premiere Support about it.

If it is indeed a plugin issue with Red Giant, then I can not use Premiere, as I rely heavily on their plugins. Not sure what plugins you have installed, but that could be the issue for you.
