premiere pro cs5 lags with image sequence
I am an animator and recently changed from rendering at SD (720 x 480 – 0.9) to HD 720p. I render a sequence from the 3D software for each shot. Premiere Pro CS5 almost quits when I get the sequences in. Most projects I work on are between 30 seconds and 1 minute. The image sequence are 24 bit targas (1280 x 720 – square). The machine is a new PC – Windows 7; processor Intel Core i7 quad – 2.8 gigahertz; 8 gig of ram; 300 gig 7200 rpm sata hard drive (200 gigs free); video card – nVidia GeForce GTX 470. Any ideas how I can get the playback to quit lagging?

Hi Mark,
HD Targas are the equivalent of uncompressed HD, plus the overhead of an image sequence. I think the bottleneck is likely your drive. You would need a solid RAID array to play this back without rendering.
If rendered, what format is the preview set to?

I am not sure exactly what you are asking. I am importing a series of 1280 x 720 targas. When I create the sequence, I have tried both ACVHD 720p and HDV 720p. I get roughly the same results with both. When I export, I check match sequence settings which gets me an mpeg render.
When I place the still sequence in the timeline, I get the yellow line meaning that I dod not need to make a preview. I was hoping there was some setting that I could just to create a preview that I could handle. When I look at the preview settings, I only have one choice: I-frame only mpeg. Why doesn’t Premiere give me more options for to make a suitable preview?

Hi Mark,
The Yellow line is related to processing, meaning the the processor should be good enough to keep up with the footage.
If, as you described, you are working with a single drive, that drive will not keep up with the data rate of the Targas. In that case rendering (via preview) to a format of a lower bit rate (as in the iFrame codec) will solve that issue. The other solution is investing in a RAID array.

Thanks Vince. Your answer actually made me realize what I was doing wrong. I have been using Premiere for nine years. In the old days, I would import the image sequence and see the red line. I would hit “enter” and get green after the preview was made. The yellow line confused me. I would hit enter and it would stay yellow (and run choppy). I see that if I select “sequence>render entire work area” I get it to go from yellow to green and play properly. Simply a matter of my ignorance. Thanks for your help.
