  • Premiere Pro CS4 timeline scrambles when file is moved

Posted by Ken Sonvico on January 8, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Premiere Pro CS 4 has become so unstable on my PC machine that I can only use PP on my Mac Pro. If I move a file on my timeline, the windows on the PP interface shift around and completely cover the timeline making it impossible to go further. (I have a pic if needed) Also, none of the the radio buttons can be selected in any of the drop down menus (Audio Gain etc.) and PP will not let me choose to not save or cancel a project when closing.
Has anybody encountered something similar to this?

My PC system is an Intel quadcore 266GHz, 6 GB of Ram and an Nvidia 7800 vid card + all PP, Win and Vid Card updates.

My MacPro – where everything works fine, is an 8 core 3GHz, 16GB Ram and ATI 1900 vid card.

    Cheers – jason

    Which version of Windows?

Have you tried reinstalling PPro yet? In older version you could delete the preferences file and fix some issues, that might be worth a try as well.

    Hey Wade,
    Thanks for the response.
I’ve reinstalled Premiere Pro CS4 and even tried going back to CS 3. Same problem.
I haven’t tried deleting the preferences file yet. Should have thought of that though, I’ve done that in the past with Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks, will try that.

I got rid of the preferences file, but that didn’t correct the problem.
In fact, on relaunching PPCS4, I discovered that I could not select a file format.
I was only allowed to move around in the AVC format.
Premiere Pro is useless on my Windows 7 box and I now discover that the cursor in After Effects is whacked too.
So I uninstalled everything, rolled back my Nvidia video driver, reinstalled, relaunched, only to find that PPCS4 is still whacked. I can not move any file on the timeline without all of the windows on the PP gui shifting and covering up the timeline.
Now to make things interesting, I have PPCS4 running at home on a similar quadcore PC with Win t and it works fine.
    Go figure.
