    So recently I decided to build a more robust computer (previous was a 6 core i7, gtx 750ti, mainly ssds), with the hope of finally being able to edit 4k footage without messing with transcoding or proxies.

    Here is the machine I built:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 3.4 GHz 16-Core (32 threads)
    GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING Black Edition
    RAM: Ballistix 64GB Sport LT Series DDR4 2666 MHz
    Boot Drive: Samsung 250GB 970 EVO NVMe M.2 Internal SSD
    Scratch Drive: Samsung 250GB 970 EVO NVMe M.2 Internal SSD
    Media Drive: Samsung 1TB 970 EVO NVMe M.2 Internal SSD

    The thing is, I’m still getting poor playback when it comes to scrubbing h.264 4K footage. Now I know that h.264 footage is a crap codec for editing, but I was pretty sure that with this much horsepower proxies would be a thing of the past. I’m not even sure what the bottleneck is, when scrubbing ram is at 30%, CPU, GPU, and drives are all below 10%.

    Is there anything hardware wise that is obviously deficient? If this doesn’t cut it, what kind of monster machine does it take to actually edit 4k h.264?

    I appreciate the reply, but the whole point of the build is to make transcoding a thing of the past. I’m willing to bump up to 128gb of ram, or maybe spring for a 1080ti or 2070 if anyone thinks those would be helpful.

    If transcoding is the only effective option then sadly I would have been better off staying with my old computer and saving the money.

    You’ve created a great custom built machine that will be a power horse for awhile.

    Now transcode your H264 media into a codec that Premiere can easily work with and you’ll be living on easy street. Without a doubt the single most misleading idea in the modern NLE world is that you can efficiently edit with H264 media. You can’t. H264 media is very CPU intensive and therefore it hogs precious resources.

    Transcode H264 to DNx, Pro Res or Cineform and you’ll see a dramatic improvement in overall performance.

    So then my question becomes what kind of hardware specs are actually required to edit 4k h.264 natively? I can edit HD h.264 easily enough on my old 6 core system, so it would make since that given enough horsepower one could edit 4K h.264 without problems too.
