Premiere Pro 2 DVCPro50/100 support?
I tried asking this in the premiere forum, but didn’t really get a clear answer.
I have premiere pro 2 and have footage shot in DVCPro50 and 100. I currently have no way of either getting that footage into Premiere or even editing it if I could get it in.
Will the Xena LHe card allow me to both capture and edit this footage in premiere pro 2? Would it allow me to capture using both firewire and SDI? Someone in the other forum thought that the Xena card does not even support 50/100 material or provide a codec to work in premiere pro 2…is that right?
I guess I’m basically just asking if the Xena card will be the answer to my problem, as we’re supposed to buy one today…but the boss will probably be pretty upset if we buy one and it doesn’t even support the only reason we’re buying it.

Did you look into the DVCPro HD tool that Serious Magic created? It used to come with DV Rack HD, but after Adobe bought them it made it difficult to understand what happened to all of their products; e.g. DV Rack HD is now OnLocation, but not sure if it comes with DVCPro HD anymore.
But anyway, it is supposed to convert the footage to AVI so you can edit it in an NLE like PPro.

The DVC Pro HD decoder will still come with On Location as far as I am told, but its DEcode only…and it’s specifically designed for P2 media’s MXF wrapper.
If you have DVC Pro 50 or 100(HD) tape assets, the best way to use them would be to ingest with the Xena as uncompressed, or in my case, I use CineForm for editing.
With the DVC Pro50, uncompressed SD is a very high quality post option while uncompressed HD can be a bit of a bear depending on your system specs and drive speed…

I’d agree with Tim’s suggestions. However, I am still disappointed that Panasonic has seemingly ignored Windows users vis-a-vis DV50. The Panny SDX900 camera and codec for DV50 is very nice for SD work. I’ve done several greenscreen shoots with the combo. Had to transcode to an uncompressed codec from the editor’s Mac though. Is it an Apple conspiracy not to offer the DV50 codec in Windows QuickTime? Hrumph!

Matrox has a codec package that will allow you to read and write DVCPRO 50. It is free. They created it back when they had the digisuite line of products. If you simply need to read and write DVCPRO 50 in the AVI format this would work. Unfortunately there is no quicktime codec for the PC.
