  • Premiere freezes when I select “Export Media”

Posted by Ben Mears on January 31, 2010 at 1:58 am

I’ve run into a new problem with Premiere, it completely freezes up when I select File>Export>Media. This happens even if Adobe Media Encoder is already open. Premiere freezes and only gives the useless beep sound if I click anywhere. I can’t even close Premiere the normal way and I have to use Ctrl Alt Delete to quit the program.

A supposed workaround would be to open Adobe Media Encoder first and then add the Premiere sequence into it but this doesn’t really work for me because it takes longer and does not give as many export options. For example, I export out a lot of still frame TGAs from my videos but I’m not able to specify a timecode or image size if I use this AME opening Premiere sequences method.

Has anybody else experienced this or have any idea what might be going on here? Its really frustrating because the Export Media option was working fine a couple of weeks ago and now it does nothing at all. As far as I know Premiere and AME have not been modified or updated at all so this really is confusing to me.

Any and all help on this issue is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    [Ben Mears] “File>Export>Media”

At this point the Export Settings window should open, not the Media Encoder. I suspect by the beep noise the Export Settings window is open, but hidden…maybe minimized to a task bar or shoved off the edge of a screen.

I think you may be right Mike.

If I hit “enter” the export data window pops up and then Media Encoder opens. I shrunk my Premiere window down to a small square in hopes that the Export Settings window was just getting hidden behind it but I still don’t see it (and the export settings window should appear over the premiere window any way).

It doesn’t look like the Export Settings window is minimized to the task bar so I’m guessing it is off screen somewhere? How would I go about bringing it back into view?

    Thanks for your help.

Try resizing your display resolution. Be sure to have the AME export set up to go then the window will appear.

Thanks for the suggestion Jon. Unfortunately, it did not seem to work.

I opened AME and set up an export with my invisible Export Settings window open and then cycled through basically every single display resolution for both of my monitors and did not see the Export Settings window in any of them.

Any other ideas or suggstions? thanks.

Are you sure you have the updated version of AME aswell as the updated version of PPro? If they are not the same updated versions they wont ‘talk’ from PPro, but AME will still work as a separate app.
AME should say 4.2.0.006 in about
PPro should say 4.2.1 in about

Ok, I finally got it figured out. The Export Settings window was located off screen (apparently in a kind of no-monitor land).

Here’s how I got it back in view:

    -Hit Alt + Space
-Hit the down arrow once (to select “Move”)
-Use the arrow keys to move the window back into view.

I’ve never really experienced a window being open but not visible because its hanging out off screen so I think that’s why I got so confused.

Thanks guys and I hope nobody else runs into this and gets as stumped as I did, ha ha.

Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut for this on a Mac? I’m running OS X 1.6.2 and have the same problem!

Thank you guys SO much! I had just spent two days trying to figure out this exact problem and came across this fix that you described, which worked like a charm. 🙂
