Premiere CS5 post alt-tab freezes for many seconds

I have this problem with Premiere CS5 (but I had it with ALL previous versions…)
If I import a lot of clips (let’s say 100, a normal amount for a normal edit) – in this case P2 clips, but images or other format is the same, everything works fine.
Whenever I try to switch back and forth from/to PPRO CS5 using ALT-TAB or mouse click on windows app bar, Premiere “freezes” for many seconds, sometimes MINUTES, I would say in proportion with the number of clips in my project. It seems like every time I switch back to Premiere, it loads all the clips again, or check them or something like that.
Since going to Photoshop or another app is very frequent during editing, this is really frustrating.
I tried on many different machines, all Quad cores with 8 gigs of RAM, so in general powerful systems, but the problem remains.
It is not a disk read problem because Premiere SHOULD NOT READ anything switching back to it, and anyway I have fast disks and a 100 MB/S NAS.
Something I am missing? Some hidden switch…?
Or a terrible BUG, that continues from the beginning of the creation of Premiere?
By the way, Windows system, at the moment Win 7 64bits, but this bug was there with Vista, XP32… etc.

The most likely culprit is overly aggressive security/anti-virus software. I have seen several instances of people eliminating this problem by turning off software such as Avast.

After being a long time fan of this site and using it for numerous tutorials and solving problems I finally created an account to address this issue as well.
I have a project file with dozens of sequences open and I noticed that it often freezes as well when I switch focus between another program and Premiere. This is a very annoying problem, especially when I only switch away for a few seconds to do something else and switch back to find that Premiere is once again, frozen. If I click anywhere (I’m on Windows 7) the entire screen goes white to indicated that the program is hanging. After around ten seconds it comes back and starts working.
I’m running an i7 processor with 4 gigs of ram. I don’t understand why it would lag like this even if I haven’t even done anything to my project file. Switching between windows should not require Premiere to load any files or read/write to my drives.

Having so many sequences open with only 4 gig of RAM is most likely where your problem lies.
Techically PPro is only using 2.5 gig of that RAM. (1.5 gig is used for other apps and the OS). All the open sequences are using that RAM. Switching apps is using the RAM.
4gig is not enough. Is the problem.still there if you only have 3 or 4 sequences open?.

I experience this problem too with CS5 (5.03) on a decent i750 win7 64bit workstation, with 12 GB ram and 3 disk setup (C: SSD drive with software, D: 7200 rpm for preview, cache, E: Media and project).
It’s very annoying, only switching between premiere and internet browser or file browser. Going back to premiere and it freezes for 5-10 seconds.
In the premiere settings I’ve assigned the max amount of ram for premiere, 9 gb.
I’ve experienced this on other PCs aswell. This is so annoying, slowing down editing alot!
Very greatful for any advice!

This has been addressed in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and later.

Thanks for clarifying! Though, it very disapointing adobe won’t fix an issue like this with 5.0x bug fix release. Customers motivation for buying newer versions should be in functionality..
