  • Premiere CS4 Lagg editing HD – is my computer powerful enough?

    Hi!

I have recently started to edit HD and HDV, and to my great disappointment it is almost impossible to edit, because the clips constant lagg and sometimes get unsynchronized with the sound. I was certain that I had a sufficient PC to edit, but then I read on Adobe.com that you have to have at least a duo 2.8 Ghz to edit HD, and only 2gb ram, 7200 rpm harddrive etc. So my question is then, despite the fact that I have a pretty powerful PC, it doesn’t help me a squat because I don’t have more than 2.4 GHz cpu even though it is a quad? So is it really only the cpu that counts on a editing program like Premiere?

    Hardware specs:
    CPU: q6600 2.4Ghz
    Graphic: GeForce 9800GTX 512mb
    Memory: 8GB highspeed ram
Harddrive: Intel X25-M 80 GB SSD Gen 2 (OS disk, and software disk)
Dedicated Cache Disk: Raptor 74GB 10 000 rpm

However, I remember buying this components, and paying some extra bucks on top notch cooling system (mainly for the memory and cpu) so I could one day clock the cpu and memory, because I know it’s possible with my cooling system to clock the q6600 up to 3.6 Ghz with ease, but I’ve never clocked a thing before.

Any input will be highly appreciated!

What OS? I’m guessing 64b as you have more than 3.2G of RAM.

Have you tried to use multiple Sequences to break up your project? That way you can work on a small subset of the project. Performance should be better that way .. couldn’t imaging doing a project without using multiple sequences.. unless it’s a very simple short project (ie still images, etc).

    Give that a try 🙂

Sounds like you have enough Horsepower. A quad core processor with 8 GB or ram should be ok, but HD video does take a lot of processor power. I have an 8 core Mac and it runs it pretty smooth. You might have some kind of bottle neck. You may need to run system monitor while editing and see if any app is using too much juice and shut it down while editing.

Your drive configuration concerns me…2 drives of less than 100GB each??
Is your source video on your “Cache” drive?

I have about 2 TB dedicated storage.

I figured that was pretty bad formulated. I included that spec too at first, but it somehow got lost when I registered a user account here.

So the disks mentioned is only for software and cache, not the raw video in itself. However, I feel I have to mention they are external drives. Can that slow down things somehow? Even though I’m sure I tested on external and internal drives.

I almost always run system monitor when I use program like these, so I it is not something else that drains the juice. I close every other program just to be sure.

I tried to edit in sequence as well, with little luck.

But I am going to try to install another OS, because I don’t feel windows 7, which I am using now, is optimal at the time being, since it also disconnects my external hard drives all the time, which I’ve come to find out is a common problem. So I will test it on Vista, to see it changes anything.

Also, maybe I should consider stepping up to a bigger editing program like Avid. I’ve always known that I have to someday, but the user interface and design really disgusts me. It is also very different from Premiere in my opinion, so it’s a big change to take on.

Beta testing as OS with software not designed or approved for the new OS has got to be an adventure full of pitfalls and little joy, especially when none of us can help.

Suggest you and Dan Finnen (who has posted his woes with Windows 7 above) get together and collaborate.

Naturally, I would have concluded with that immediately, if it hasn’t been for the fact that every other program in Adobe Production Suite works splendidly. Adobe Flex and Digidesign Pro Tools as well. But as I said, I will try it on Vista, going to install it right now, as I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Thanks for inputs so far! 🙂

I will just say it solved the lagg problem with using Vista instead og Windows 7.

Thank you very much to everyone who commented my post 🙂

But I still have my problem with my two brand new external hard drives disconnecting and then connects all the time. This is the same in Vista and Windows 7, but I guess this is not the thread to ask in.
