Premiere CS3 won’t render HDV timeline– emergency
I’m working on a 4 minute project in CS3 with HDV footage (originally shot in PAL format) with the project setting at 1440 by 1080, 25 fps (50i)
The major problem is that I can’t export my timeline, and technically the spot was due a couple days ago but I’ve gotten something of an extension– until today– due to these technical problems.
The first 600 frames or so of the movie seem to render, but anything after that generally produces a
“Error compiling movie: unknown error” message, and I can’t render other parts of the timeline.Anyone have thoughts?

Hi Michael,
You didn’t mention what format you are trying to export to. Is this an Export to HDV tape, or some other multimedia format? If HDV, have you been able to render red bars to green, prior to Export? Export to HDV does require that the video be transcoded to HDV before export, and wondering if that is where you are getting stuck, or you simply can’t render red bars to start with

I have been unable to render most of the red bars, with the exception of erratic sections that do work, as in the first 600 frames.
I am not exporting back to tape– I am hoping to eventually export to quicktime files.
I’ve developed a temporary workaround where I was able to import the project into a new project, and I also found out that a lot of my problem is based around quicktime and exporting in H.264. Nothing will render, though I have been able to export a file as a .wmv (but cannot export quicktime files) and if I attempt to render the timeline I still get unknown errors.

Assuming you used a proper Premiere Project Preset to match your footage/frame rate, I don’t know off hand what would cause this.
Is the timeline just video clips, or do you have some graphics/stills mixed in? Oversized graphics, or stills with very long file names or illegal characters in file names have caused issues in the past. Just throwing out wild guesses here.

Originally I had a few jpg images, and additional types of video footage in small clips besides my HDV footage. After the problems started, I converted all the non HDV footage to .mov files, though that hasn’t solved the unknown error issue that prevents rendering the timeline.
I was able to export this project without rendering the red bars over the clips as a wmv, but I’d like to figure out what’s going on for future reference.
Many people have posted on the
“Error compiling move: unknown error” problem, but I haven’t found a good solution yet. -

I have had plenty of these ‘Error compiling: Unknown Error’ problems – for me it was my graphics card drivers and an option settings change, I installed latest versions of these (ATI) and also set the render option to ‘Memory’ instead of ‘Performance’ and after a reboot or two got my sequence to render ok.

Exporting to QuickTime can be troublesome for unexplained reasons on some systems…
I’ve gone to a system where I’ll export an uncompressed AVI (in your case I’d also specify “1920×1080” to get the material into square pixel aspect), and then run it through QT Pro. It’s the best 29.95 (USD) you’ll ever spend.
