I’ve been editing on my system (dual Xeon, 2gb ram, XP Pro, with Adobe CS3 Production Premium Suite) for a long time with no problems at all. Then, last week, Premiere quits working… when opened, it displays the splash screen while loading, then gives the “Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 has encountered a problem and needs to close…” window, and that’s it… I can’t even get to the menu to open a project. I can’t think of anything abnormal that triggered this problem, and there have been no hardware/software changes. All other Adobe apps work fine besides Premiere.

I’ve tried every trick I know; deleting my user preferences, opening Premiere under a different Windows user account, uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime, removing all third party plugins, even deleting and reinstalling the ENTIRE CS3 suite. Nothing has made a difference. The office where I work has a second editing system identical to mine, and all of my footage/projects open on it in Premiere perfectly, so they’re not corrupted at least.

Does anyone know some weird problem that I’m missing here? I’m desperate to get this thing running Premiere again. Thanks for any help!

That is indeed very mysterious. You have tried most of the tricks in the book, however maybe you will find a few more here.

    Cheers

Thanks for that link.. I think I may have seen it earlier and I’ve tried a lot of things on the list, but I’ll try a few more and see if I get anywhere.

Can you view the error report when the crash happens. It might be helpful to know what is causing the fault.

Have you tried a system restore?

Well, thanks everyone for help, but I FINALLY figured out the problem… it was a corrupt font.

The font works in all other applications but consistently crashes Premiere. For anyone else that has this problem, the font is called “city burn night after night and we spraypaint the walls”, downloaded from dafont.com. Apparently someone else on that site had the same issue with CS4 as well.

Wow – that’s wild. I had the same problem – Premiere Pro just crashing on startup. Got on Google, found your post and realised that I just installed that font a couple of days ago. Deleted it and all is fine. Who would have thought a font could cause such a crash? How did you figure it out? Cheers!

It’s only work if you’d rather be doing something else…

I’m glad you figured out your problem too…

When Premiere refused to start I tried to think about what may have changed in my system, and I had forgotten about adding the font until after I had tried all the usual fixes. The thing that threw me off was that all other Adobe CS3 applications worked FINE with the font, so there was nothing to suspect about it. At first, I thought I remembered using Premiere successfully since I had added the font, but I guess I remembered incorrectly.

Note to self… always check EVERYTHING that might have recently changed when Premiere doesn’t work.

One thing you might try is to start a new project, and import the ‘crashing’ project into the new project. I heard this worked for some people.

Thanks for your post regarding that font! I was having the same problem myself with Premiere crashing on startup. I thought, “Surely it can’t be that font… what are the chances of-” and sure enough… there it was.

Deleted the font and Premiere loads fine. Thanks again for posting your solution!
