  • Premiere Crash On Reconnect of Linked AE Comps

I’ve had this problem for a while and I’ve dealt with it by just rendering png sequences rather than using linked comps but now that I’m starting to use the text templates I have to get this worked out.

My problem is that linked comps in Premiere will randomly go offline. Today I was editing with a text template from AE and everything was fine with my previews so I went to export and the file came out with the Media offline warning where I had my linked comp.

So I go to Premiere and it says “Media Offline” where just moments ago I had a working linked comp. I try to reconnect the file and Premiere crashes saying “Sorry a serious error has occurred…”

When I reopen the project the linked comp shows the unlinked icon and the screen says “Media Pending” for a few minutes then goes back to offline. I try reconnecting again and it crashes again.

I’ve done a little research and the two suggestions I came across were emptying the media cache and trying again which I did and that it may be a RAM issue. I have 20GB with 9GB free when this is happening. I usually have 14 GB allocated to Adobe apps, but to test it out I pushed it to 17GB which is the max it will allow.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the details on the system – people often forget to include that.

The first tip would be to trash your preferences, which I would give a greater than 50% chance of being the issue…

10.9.5 does fix some CC2014 issues around audio so if preferences doesn’t fix the issue, it can’t hurt to update your OS.

Beyond that, I’d make sure your CUDA driver is up to date, though I don’t think that’s really the issue.

Failing all of that, I would do this: Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately trashing the prefs didn’t do anything. My CUDA is up to date and I’ll update the OS in the morning.

I have been able to figure out what’s causing it and hopefully this information will help narrow down the problem. It happens when my AE project is closed.

What happened yesterday was I finished the edit, sent the timeline to AME, then shut down Premiere and AE and moved on to something else.

I have tried all combinations of opening different projects and just have AE open but no project and the only thing that works is to have the AE project open while I’m in the Premiere project. In fact, as long as that’s open, the linked comp is one of the first pieces of media to reconnect.

I started doing this when one of my coworkers told me that his linked comps rendered noticeably faster when he closed down AE while rendering linked comps in timelines.

Any thoughts given the new information?

    Thanks,
    Darren

One new thing that is coming very soon in Premiere Pro 8.1 will be a new feature called “Render and Replace” which may help you. You will be able to right click on an AE comp and render it to a codec of your choice so that you can not worry about issues like you’re experiencing.

One question around the issue itself. How much RAM do you have again?

It does sound like something has gone awry in your install and I wouldn’t be opposed to you doing this: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Having worked with hundreds of AE/PPro linked comps and given the existing very unstable situation with dynamic link, I have found the following simple rules apply.
You must have enough system resources to be able to run AE & PPro side by side. The key to this is sufficient Ram.
Open AE and select/create the AE project to be linked to. Then open PPro and proceed to create comps.
When you create a dynamic link to AE from PPro, the linked comp will always be created in the already open AE project.

The benefit is that you will only have one AE project for a given PPro Project making any subsequent re-linking very easy.
By opening/creating an AE project before the PPro project you can target different sequences within a PPro project to different AE projects. Of course you will have to consider your project naming protocols.
    I hope this helps.

I used to be Jon Hiseman but I’m feeling better now.

    Hi Dennis,

I wound up doing reinstall/clean and that seemed to clear things up. Seems that you were right and something just went sideways somewhere along the way.

Feels nice to have it working again and I’m loving this AE text template feature. Just did lower 3rds for a long form in no time.

    Thanks for your assistance.
