  • Premiere CC is lowering audio nearly -6 db when exporting 24-bit mono

    This is odd,

I have a 3 minute trailer with mono 5.1 surround sound stems in premiere CC.(mac)

all the levels play at the same proper levels from pro-tools, within premiere cc

When I mute all but one track to export each stem as 24-bit mono, then open that
up in audition to check the levels, the track has been lowered about -6.

any ideas what’s going on here and how to address this?

I checked the audio mixer and there are no adjusted settings there or in the
audio tracks to indicate to lower the levels and as I said, when played within premiere,
    they are correct.

    All tracks are affected.

I know in final cut pro, there was the sequence audio setup where you
could set +3, 0 or -3. It seems like premiere is doing that at -6 though
nothing was changed on my part to make that happen.

Maybe the “pan laws” for PPro are what is causing this. I don’t edit 5.1 but I know most audio applications use “panning laws” that dictate what the volume when a channel is at center. If it were “0”, channels that had automated panning(left to right audio movement) would get extremely loud as the audio panned from left to right, so “pan laws” were implemented on audio software to lower the volume(as far as left and right are concerned)as it gets closer to center, maybe Adobe’s pan law is -4.5.

When you are playing back all the tracks the sound at center is additive and all tracks will sound louder as each track is added. You’ll also get bass build up and harsh high end as all the noise on every track gets added with the last one. But, maybe you know this already and there is something wrong with PPro.

Concur with you on the panning laws being a concern.

One of my colleagues had a recent premiere cc project he exported as individual surround stems (sourced from a pro-tools mix) same situation as me, but he had the sequence set up for Multi-channel, NOT the 5.1 option.

    His levels came through, unmolested.

So I made a new sequence with those settings and now the audio is exporting
at the levels it should be (not being adjusted -6db on export)

here’s what the mixer looks like on that if helps anyone else.
