    Long story as short as I can:

    I had Premiere 6.5 – loved it – it quit working (“open new project” produces a “this program needs to close” and “send Windows XP error report?” every time).

    Bought Premiere Pro 7.0 – sure miss my friendly dual tracks. I suppose I can’t fight progress, but can anybody suggest how to get 6.5 back working again (or am I just gonna have to live with the new edition)?

    Or maybe you can tell me that I’ll be happier in the long run.

    Try uninstalling Premiere Pro and reinstall Premiere 6.5. Also, download and install a program called CrapCleaner to clear up any junk that you might have on your system.
