premier problems-generating peak files and capturing window issue RESOLVED in one- horrah!
I have solved a couple of problems which have plagued me for months and I hope this info is useful to someone!
I had two problems which I felt were both related; one was that on attempting to open the capture window in Premier cs4 to capture footage off a mini DV recorder, Premier would crash. I then opted to capture my footage in another programme and import it into Premier. Unfortunately this other programme did something bizarre to the audio part of the footage, and when Premier was trying to generate peak files for the audio it would get to the end and then crash.
My solution:
The key was in solving the capture window problem. Then I could select it to capture video only and get rid of the peak file problem (although I am sure that this problem would also have been sorted as Premier would have been capturing the audio itself and would not have had to deal with corrupted audio files).
This is what I did:
-Start a new Premier project and open the capture window with the device NOT plugged in/switched on.
-Plug in and switch on the device (in my case a mini dv camcorder).
-In the capture window select to capture ‘video’ only.
-Go to the ‘settings’ tab, under ‘device control’ section make sure dv/hdv device control was selected and click on ‘options’. Make sure ‘video standard – pal’ and click ‘ok’ (funny at this point is said ‘check status: online’ so premier knew the device was there!!)
-At the top right of the window there is a sub-menu icon (little arrow with lines) click on that, go to ‘capture settings’, select ‘dv’ and hit ‘ok’I had to then wait about 5 seconds whilst the capture window flicked between grey and black, then it suddenly started working and I could capture as normal.
I have no idea why this works, I speculate it prevents Premier trying to get information it can’t and almost bypasses the stumbling block.
