Premier Pro SDI out
Posted by Davib Le roux on January 18, 2012 at 12:53 pmI am using a Decklink Studio card to send SDI out to an SNG van from my timeline.
This worked perfectly for FCP7, but now we have switched to premiere for faster AVCHD editing/ingesting.The problem is that although i have downloaded the latest software from decklink, Premiercs5.5 doesn’t seem to recognise the video side of the Decklink card. It allows me to map audio out through Blackmagic Audio, but under Device control only fives me the DV firewire option or “none”.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Make sure that you are using a BlackMagic sequence – a native Adobe sequence won’t utilize third-party hardware

January 18, 2012 at 2:12 pmIn FCP, the output of the timeline to hardware devices was independent of the timeline format to some degree, in Premiere theres a slightly less flexible relationship between timeline and video monitoring hardware – though, as you noted, this issue doesn’t apply to the audio outs which makes matters a bit confusing. Not an ideal design choice, but that’s how it is.
You’ll need to create a sequence using a Blackmagic Design Player preset (I’m not sure that’s what it’s called, but for Matrox it’s the Matrox Player and for AJA the AJA player.)
If you edited the sequence in a BMD sequence setup then you would usually (Matrox and AJA) use the configuration software to route the video to the appropriate hardware output(s). I take it you’re not using the decklink card for monitoring during edit, because if you were you’d simply playout that same way.
If you didn’t cut the sequence(s) in a BMD Player sequence, you’ll need to create one in the output format you’d like, and then copy and paste your edit into, or nest the edit and place a nested sequence in a BMD player sequence. Create a new Sequence and you should see some BMD options in the list.
One thing to pay attention to is the viewer/program monitor resolution; make sure the resolution is “full” before play out.

I may be doing something wrong somewhere, but as far as i can tell there is no option to create a “blackmagic sequence” -

January 18, 2012 at 2:23 pmHi Petrus
thanks for the response. I may be doing something wrong somewhere, but as far as i can tell there is no option to create a “blackmagic sequence”. There are only the regular presets and no compression options for blackmagic HD or blackmagic anything (as in FCP or even after effects)

January 18, 2012 at 2:37 pmHi David,
As mentioned by the guys above, you need to create a blackmagic sequence and put all the contents of your edit timeline in that sequence.
Go to File>New>Sequence
a pop up menu will appear. On the Sequence Presets Tab, you need to select the Blackmagic Design Folder and choose from the list below the file resolution you would want to edit/work on. That should do the trick.
If for some reason you do not see the Blackmagic Design Folder, I suggest you reinstall the latest BlackMagic Design Drivers for your card.
Best of luck!

January 18, 2012 at 2:39 pmHi Davib,
From the Decklink User Guide online – “The New Sequence window will appear. Select the desired Blackmagic preset, give the sequence
a name and then click OK.”If you are looking at the Sequence Presets in Premiere and see no folder that says Black Magic, then perhaps the install is not complete. Please go through the user guide and check the setup again.

“As i mentioned, I have installed the latest software available from blackmagic (downloaded them this morning and reinstalled) but there is still no sign of the Blackmagic Design folder anywhere.
It works wonderfully in FCP7 and also in AE CS5.5 but no joy in premiere.

January 18, 2012 at 2:40 pmAlso, you have to make sure to install the BMD driver AFTER installing APP. This is true even if you ALREADY had the BMD card running with FCP.
Then, Yes, under create new sequence you will the BMD presets. You have to use one of those to use the card I/O’s.

January 18, 2012 at 2:42 pmI did a new install of premiere, then a new install of black magic, then BMD ran some auto updates, did all this just a few hours ago and still nothing. I know what I am supposed to do but there is no BMD folder in the new sequnce section.
