Premier Pro CS4 Windows 7 Slow Render Times on Fast Workstation
Currently I’m running CS4 Master Collection on two machines. Specs are as follows:
Machine 1: Windows XP Pro; 4GB Ram (Effectively only 2.5 – Thanks Microsoft!) ; Intel Core2 Extreme CPU X9770 @ 3.20GHz; 3x – Nvidia GeForce 280 SLI
Machine 2: Windows 7 Pro; 8GB Ram; Intel Xeon CPU X5570 @ 2.93 GHz; 1x Nvidia Quadro FX 4800
Here’s the problem! My XP machine renders videos almost 2x-3x FASTER than my Windows 7 Machine. By all accounts my Windows 7 Pro machine should be cranking out videos much faster than the XP machine. Is this a driver issue? (All drivers are up-to-date). Is this a CS4 update issue? (All CS4 apps are up-to-date). Is this a Windows 7 compatibility issue? Or is this an ID-10-T (idiot) error? Has anyone else experienced a degradation in performance when using Windows 7?

First off, your available memory being around 3GB isn’t because of Microsoft, it’s because you’re running a 32-bit operating system. Any operating system – linux, Mac OS X, Windows, etc. that is 32-bit is going to have the same limitation. You need to use a 64-bit version of Windows, so go buy one if you want more than ~3GB of RAM available.
As for the severe performance degradation…interesting. Are you sure you’re doing identical comparisons to compare performance? The exact same project file exporting the exact same settings? Depending on how large the media you’re working with is, it could be hard drive-related if you’re running everything off one drive and encoding to it on the W7 machine and not on the XP one.
I noticed no degradation in performance going to Windows 7. The opposite, actually; my encoding times sped up. There must be a reason why you’re seeing a significant performance hit. Try uninstalling security software and stuff if hard drives aren’t the reason.
