Prem CS5 – Cant capture HDV from my Canon XLH1s
Posted by Laura Petrella on August 4, 2010 at 9:26 pmHello everone!
I am having a hard time capturing a video that I shot in HiDef.
I have Prem CS5. The capture window does not see the video, cannot record it, does not have TC running, yet it can start or stop the camera. Yesterday I thought I had succeded and instead I imported DV at 740 x 480 . Yet the sequence had the correct settings. I am really confused. This is my first major HD work on P CS5 and I hope someone can help me.

It’s a common problem. Here is an article to show you how to fix it:

August 5, 2010 at 12:06 pmTry capturing with HDV Split. Is not as picky as Premiere.

And it gives you preview which Premiere still cant do. -

August 5, 2010 at 1:58 pmHi Laura,
Most HDV cameras by default from the factory are set to DOWNCONVERT HDV > DV on the 1394 output. That’s why you have timecode and deck control but no video, camera is sending out DV but Premiere is looking for HDV signal.
With camera in VCR mode, go into menu settings and look for the “DV Convt”, “1394 Convt”, HDV > DV” or similar, I forget the wording Canon uses. Turn this OFF, and also, for “VCR”, you may have a choice of AUTO, HDV or DV, set this to HDV.
Important: CLOSE Premiere. Turn the camera OFF. Now power up the camera again (already connected via 1394) so PC recognizes it as an HDV device rather than a DV device. Now you can start Premiere and should be able to capture HDV

I have tried it but it did not work. Still no response from P CS5.
Any other ideas would be welcomed. 🙂 -

August 5, 2010 at 11:07 pmHi Ann,
I tried what you suggested. I don’t know if HDV split works with Windows 7. I also was not able to download some required drivers because the following link was not working. https://hdvforever.com/hdv/hdrhc1/freecapture/default.htm
So unfortunately still no solution
Do you have any other ideas?
Thank you so much

August 5, 2010 at 11:09 pmHi Jeff,
thank you for your input. I checked the camera and it seems to have all the correct settings to playback HDv. But Premiere CS5 still does not recognized it.
Any thoughts?
Thank you for your helpLaura

August 6, 2010 at 1:03 amCan you confirm the FW cable works and the camera can be detected at all? You may have burnt out the FireWire connector on the camera by accident!

August 6, 2010 at 2:47 amLaura, are you on a Dell computer? They are known for having problems with the built-in firwire ports and video capture.
Either way, you might want to try a cheap firewire card from Best Buy, you can get them for $10 to $20. That has fixed the problem for me on a HP computer.
There are several different Firewire chipsets that the various motherboard manufacturer’s use. Most of the time a Firewire card will have a different chipset than what is on the motherboard. Using the Firewire card will fix it 99% of the time.
