can anyone enlighten me as to what a pre-grade involves?

someone has suggested it is doing a basic grade before the senior grader starts work on it, but not sure how this would work…

    any help much appreciated

Whoever suggested this might not have experience working with professional colorists…who HATE when editors with no color correcting experience do this. They delete the pre-grade and start from scratch. SO it would be a waste of time and money.

    +1 with regard to colorists.

OTOH, if you’ve got big changes of exposure and color balance between shots and your commissioner is a technical and imaginative imbecile (which is not as, er, unusual as one might hope) it can be useful to do a rough grade for viewings before you get to picture lock stage.

    thanks for the replies.

turns out the term in this case referred to the prep work involved for transferring the sequence into the grading suite
