I have an edited piece in Adobe Premier Pro consisting of video shot on a Canon 7D, edited with a smattering of overlay graphics.

This was to be for the web, but the client has asked that I deliver to HDCAM EX or Apple ProRes:422. I know that the former is the evolution of the Sony HDCAM format and I happened to be at NAB when they debuted the first EX camera. And I know that ProRes:422 is a staple of the Final Cut Pro world and many high-end cameras and digital recorders record to this format natively for FCP users.

I’ve never had occasion to see, use, edit or output to this format.

I didn’t notice the formats in the Export Media offerings (perhaps I overlooked it). I’ll bet the smart folks on this forum are all over this topic.

Please give me the skinny on what I need to do to make this happen.

    Thanks so much,

The only way to get ProRes encoding available on your system is to have FCP (legacy or new X brand) installed, or the new Compressor. You need some Apple Final Cut product installed to get the ProRes encoding ability. And you can only do that on a Mac. NO ProRes encoding on PC so far.

Avid MC6 also has ProRes encoding ability.

    Hi Buck,

For XDCAM / XDCAM EX, you’ll need to spend about $400.00 on the Mainconcept plugin.

Hoping that Sony is paying attention and that they’ll soon be offering tools for Pr users, the same way they’ve been doing it for FCP users..

You also can get the ProRes codecs with Motion 5 for $49.95. More of an update than the new Compressor.

If you have an HDSDI video I/O card, you could rent a KiPro and make a ProRes master that way…even from a Windows machine.

You can certainly export XDcamHD422 MXF from PPro CS5.5…not sure why you’d want to master to 4:2:0 XDcamEX unless the client specified it as the only thing they can read.
