  • PP CC — sloggish realtime playback of proxy video files

    Hi!

I am running PP CC on a 64 bit Service Pack 1 Win 7 Dell T3500 Intel Xeon CPU 2.67 GHz with 12 GB RAM and 2 HDD’s (Media on a striped 2 TB and application on a 500GB system drive).

I have a 2 hour long film of which about an hour is complete (inside about 25 sequences in the PP project file). It consists of many rendered after effects clips which I have output to low res, WMV video only proxy files (typically less than 10 MB). On a side note, I have rendered companion JPG image sequences for these which are offline for now which will be exchanged with the WMV files when I do the final output.

My problem is I am having problems getting real-time playback of the low res proxy WMV files. My resource monitor shows plenty of available RAM and only about 50% CPU use.

I have tested other proxy file formats/settings like MP4 and they do not playback any smoother (and result in about double the file size).

Any suggestions on a file format / output settings for a proxy file that will give me consistent realtime payback?

    Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi Joel,
Do the sequence settings match the clip settings precisely? Did you drop a clip on the new item button or right click it to select the “Create New Sequence from Clip” option?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi,

I actually started out using QT .mov files rendered with H.264 and have been replacing those with the .wmv files … so the sequences were established using those original .mov/H.264 files.

In the last few minutes, I have been testing proxy files rendered with the H.264 / MP4 format 8mbps VBR 1 Pass setting and they appear to playback without hiccups.

Although the result is about double the file size. if they will consistently replay in realtime maybe I should switch to this.

Back to your point … do I need to change each sequence to match these new H.264 clips and what will happen when I replace these H.264 MP4 files when I replace them with my master JPG image sequences?

Thanks so much for your help.
